Creaking and knocking from front end

Post by chrissatchell »

Hi all,
My 2.0 SDi has a bit of an issue and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.

When going over bumps, on initial contact there's a creak and a knock from the front end, then when the front end finishes going over it, there's a knock from the front end. It also tends to creak a bit when making slow turns or pulling away.

Any ideas?

Sounds like ARB problems, maybe disconnect a drop link and take it for a drive, see if the noises go away.

I had a feeling it might be drop link related looking around the internet, so I've actually ordered a pair, so I'll fit them when they come on Friday and report back, thanks!

I've got a knocking from the front end since a week after lowering. Going to do the same myself, I found this cheesy video - looks quite easy.

The only thing is Doc, do we need to get our front wheels tracked again?

Nice video, good that there was no angle grinder or swearing required for that example.

You won't need to have a wheel alignment as the ARB and drop links are more for stability rather than suspension geometry.
That said, if you find that when you remove both drop links, one or both struts drops quite a bit, you may have a damaged strut/shock which will require alignment checking and adjustment if replaced.

Cheers. I thought my kit came with drop links to be honest.

Your lowering kit may have come with drop links but they won't influence the alignment to any significant degree.

Have you had a chance to check your van? Any ideas where your knocking was coming from?

Drop links. Top mounts, ARB. We'll see I guess, top mounts have arrived but the drop links are late, do them and if not then I guess it's the ARB D bushes
