OOOOOPS... Looks like i might need a new engine!

Post by Wilson »

Hi all. Can I firstly say go easy on me here as I'm neither a genius nor a mechanic... just a guy who loves his Caddy and is desperate to get her back on the road.

So Ive got a 2008 Maxi Sportline black box van which I've had almost 3 years and have been slowly converting over the last couple of years to a sort of stealth camper kombi kid carrier.

I've put in Touran mid row seats and seatbelts, Touran carpets, windows in the side doors, fitted insulation, custom fitted my own ply panels, wired her up for lights, power, aftermarket stereo and plenty of speakers (4 tweets, 4 mids and a powered sub) plus a Flettner low pro spinning cowl, external DAB+ Ariel and a set of roof rails on top, I've got all my switch panels, lights, stereo, speakers, seats and 4 way stretch carpet ready to go in. In the last 6 months she's also had new brake discs and callipers all round, track rods n ends, shocks, springs, mounts plus ball joints and bushes on the wishbones so she's raring to go.

Only thing is it looks like the engine might have expired!

It's a 2.0 TDI 140bhp BMM engine and I'm not going to go into a huge spell about it but the basics are she had a rebuild from the bottom up 70.000 miles ago. I was just about to get the timing belt done when she started shuddering very slightly, making a bit of a blowing exhaust noise around the turbo somewhere and when she was cold a subtle metallic insistent sound on top of the engine which may have been the camshaft? Yesterday I took her in to a very respected local engine specialist to book her in to get sorted. They had a look and listen and said I had some back pressure in the engine and it would be 2 weeks wait for a proper diagnostic. On my way home which is only a few miles (and i was being super gentle) something went pop and I started getting a pretty loud bang bang bang noise and she really lost power. Pulled over quick and got a tow back to my house.

So I may be looking for a new engine. The guys I went to see will pull my engine out and recon it and i totally trust them but that's a starting price of about £3K and I'm just not very flush after 14 months off work! There are a few BMM engines on eBay but i'm a bit nervous about what to go for if I do end up needing a replacement.

Does anyone know if I can put any BMM engine in my Caddy or does it have to be specifically from a Caddy to fit nice and easy. As far as I know there is the Skoda Octavia,, a Golf, the EOS and Touran that use the same engine.

If anyone has a very nice condition engine lying around under 100k miles and under £1000 they'd like to sell me then I'm all ears but failing that any advice on this issue would be gratefully received.

Currently crying into my soup!

Thanks in advance.

Ah mate sorry to hear this as it sounds like you’ve invested a lot of love into your van, as all of us on here have!

I’ve recently helped a forum member out who also had engine failure with a TFSI dsg conversion as it was cheaper than getting his 1.6 engine rebuilt! I’m doing another TFSI manual conversion next week also for a fellow member @dub_nutz whose local to me. His van has only done 60k and his engine will be available, but its a 1.6 from a 13 plate van.

I also have a passat 2.0 tdi 6 speed here too with a bit more than 100k but fsh and ive known the car for years! If any good to you let me know, do it very cheap for you mate!

Hope you get it sortedImage

Hef mate. Thanks very much for that. I've been advised that It'll save on headaches to put as close as possible to the exact same engine in if I do end up going for replacement. TBH I like the idea of fitting a 16v 2.0 PD but i'd need a new ECU and wiring loom at the very least if I'm not mistaken. I need an engine that will go in fairly easy and run for 50k without too much hassle. Also I'll keep the current engine for spares so makes sense to go like for like i think. Anyway thanks again bud... keep on Caddying! W

To be honest, the offer from hef for the passat engine is probably the best and cheapest option you'll find, he has the donor car, take the van in and pick it up running I would snap his hand off.

@Wilson
I’m the one Hef helped out when my van ended up in a similar state to yours. I went for the conversion because by the time I’d bought all the parts and paid to have them fitted my conversion worked out cheaper.
You can trust Hef mate, I ended up with a 2.0 TFSI with DSG for less money and it’s so much more of a van now not to mention what it’s done to the value.
They’ve got a dedicated electrician to sort out all the wiring and coding mate and it’ll come back looking OEM standard. The workmanship is first class same as the attention to detail.
I’ve seen that Passat running, it’s on 100k but that wouldn’t bother me, it’s a very strong engine...
Good luck bud but I have to say there’s no way I’d spend 3k on that engine when you’ve got Hef available to help you out...

I understand that there is an issue with the BMM engine. We have a 2008 Skoda Octy now on 128k miles. Circa 105K the engine began to run really rough and there was juddering, bangs and smoke. Turned out some of the cam lobes were worn. Up to that point it had a full Skoda main dealer / Specialist service history. Cost over £1K to have the camshaft replaced and that was cheap. It really soured my enjoyment of the car. Now on 128K and just waiting for the next "issue". Don't do enough miles to benefit from a diesel or ensure the DPF regularly regens. However a great engine for long distance road trips.
Good luck.

@Caddymaxi13

Sorry to hear about your engine mate!

Yes, done a few petrol conversions now mate and happy to help if I can.

The best, and the only way I would consider taking on such an engine conversion is to buy the best donor vehicle you can afford that you can try and test to make sure the engine and management is error free.

I can source a donor and do it all if you want. 2 week turnaround usually buddy and it’s pretty straight forward.

What year is your van?

Cheers

Hef

Mostly the swap he did for me except he converted mine to DSG at the same time. I’ll vouch for the quality of his work all day long bud….
