2008 Maxi Life Washer Jets (VCDS LOG)

Post by Drewcole »

I'm slightly stumped on this one, I have done plenty of reading and found various conflicting bits of infomation online as you'd expect.

Firstly some post (on here included), stating there is a fuse for the washer pump, but for the life of me I cannot find one in the place that any of the diagrams suggest and eitherway, all the fuses in the board are okay and there aren't any empty slots.

So next I move onto the pump, disconnected and bench tested it. All is fine with that.

I've not got a multi meter, but have one arriving tomorrow so will test to see if there is any power to the plug for the pump.

I have got a friend with VCDS who ran the fault codes for me and the below came up:

00156 - Control Circuit for Windshield Washer Pump
009 - Open or Short to Ground - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00101001
Fault Priority: 3
Fault Frequency: 5
Reset counter: 13
Mileage: 191648 km
Time Indication: 0

Freeze Frame:
ON
Voltage: 13.75 V

02398 - Control Circuit for Rear Windshield Washer Pump
009 - Open or Short to Ground - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00101001
Fault Priority: 3
Fault Frequency: 1
Reset counter: 253
Mileage: 191490 km
Time Indication: 0

Freeze Frame:

Voltage: 11.80 V

Can anyone give me any pointers to check next please as if the pump connection has power then I am clean out of ideas!

Thanks.

There’s 2 relais that control the pump. Sometimes they die unfortunately or get stuck.
It’s seems that’s what your experiencing.

Iirc they are numbered 446 on the top and they should have 5 pins in the bottom.

They should be easy and cheap to get at breakers and easy to replace in order to test.

Yep, the control circuit is only from the CECM/BCM to the relay so pay attention around that area.

Okay perfect thank you, I'll start by replacing the 446 relays and go from there then.

@Doc just to confirm, I'm looking behind the panel where the light switch is?

There are some 449 relays in there.

There should be two of them underneath each other

Unless I'm missing something I can't see them, below pic of the relays behind the dash / light switch

There are two behind the bunch of cables, they have 404 on them.

Ah Haaaa (in my best Alan Partridge voice).....

Just came across this :

So looks as if the 404 relays are the ones for the washer pump in B7/8 locations..

Back out to check!

Have changed the relays without any joy.

Tested the plug to washer pump and still no power.

What are the chances of the stalk itself having gone squiffy?

The wipers and all other functions work okay, could it be possible just for the washer function to be worn out?

Any other suggestions welcomed

It could be the stalk, mechanical switches do wear out.
Check wether there is power to the relay and switched power when operating the stalk.
Also check ground at the pump and relay.

When you use the stalk for the washing function, do you actually hear the relais clicking?

Guessing I could check that at the relay board with a multi meter?

No so that's why I think it is now back to the stalk..

It's an annoying issue, but one I quite like figuring out, with forum help!

This is the VCDS log I took.

Does suggest a ground issue perhaps?

I'm new to VCDS so understanding it is something I'm working on Image//cloud.tapatalk.com/s/60ce1d79b84 ... C58UED.pdf
