Pipe in the engine bay

Post by The Ledge »

Hi, I'm new on here and I have just bought a 14 plate 1.6 caddy van.
I was having a look under the bonnet and noticed a pipe attached at one end but not at the other and there seems to be no visible place to attach it or at least I can't seem to find it.
Any help would be appreciated.
I will post a picture if the pipe.

Can you get a picture of the other end of the pipe….what it’s connected to?

I’ll have a look in my engine bay and see if I can throw light on it.

I think the pipe you’re referring to is this one. 2nd one back on the particulate pressure difference sensor (yes I had to google the part number to see what it was ImageImage)
If so, it isn’t connected to anything and goes in the clip on the timing belt cover.

See below. Image

That's one of the pipes off your DPF differential pressure sensor. If it's disconnected and you have no error codes, you have a van which has had the DPF turned off.
If it's not been gutted you might have potential problems on your hands.
I'd at least reconnect the pipe so it's not obvious if you go for MOT or get pulled over.

Maybe this parts diagram will help. Think the drawing is flipped for LHD Caddys so maybe bit misleading. Think the hose is the one on the left under #17.

Hi Doc, no error codes on the dash and the van passed its Cvrt test (in Ireland ) just before I bought it.
One of the pipes is attached.
Where should the second one be attached to?

@Doc, this is something I’ve never heard of.
The pipe on mine also goes to nothing too. There’s nowhere obvious that I can see where it should be connected to.
Does this mean my DPF has been removed/turned off? (mine was owned by BG before me, and hasn’t been owned by anyone else)
I hope it won’t cause any reliability issues or damage.

My understanding is that one is upstream and the other is downstream to monitor across the DPF. Odd thing is, on that diagram the hose doesn't go anywhere and I've had a look on other parts diagrams to see if there's any other references to it.

On this one for sale you can see the solid pipe that goes to the downstream side of the DPF but I can't find that in the diagrams and its not in the one above.

But then this one has a sensor plugged in there and the hose isn't connected to the DPF

Probably not very helpful but here's my 16 plate 2.0 for reference.

Have a good look at the open end of the tube, does it look like it's been cut with a knife? Does it look like it's been pushed on something maybe marks on the inside? Does it look like it's had a hose clamp on the end?

It could be something like a vent or a tube to equalise the valve with atmospheric pressure or something.
You may find a diagram online for the pressure sensor its attached to with that output labeled.

It could be something that's used on a different engine.

No, it doesn't look cut or if it's ever been connected to anything before.

It's pretty common for the dpf pressure sensor to have one pipe to atmosphere or sometimes only just one pipe to the dpf. Not all have before and after pipes, some even have more than one pressure sensor!
