Re: mpg & five or six speed
My 1.9 tdi 5 speed sits at 3k at 80mph and does 45mpg on a tank, not much motorway work to be honest just a few dual carriageways.
Having said this I run 160bhp and like to use it now and again

Re: mpg & five or six speed
Just done the 6 speed conversion on mine as the flywheel was rattling it nuts off, bought the box, shafts and starter for £350, sold the 5 speed box for £300 so a no brainer for me. The van drives so much better but supprisingly is no better on fuel really, saying that I am seeming to drive faster as I never used to go above 80 as didn't like doing it to my baby. 80mph in 6th is just over 2000rpm.
Well worth doing, the van can also take more power due to the increased size 150pd clutch/flywheel.

Yes, simple bolt on and off job. I did it in 6 hours start to finish on the floor. All you need are shafts from the Golf, starter and box. I used the Caddy linkages even though I had them from the Golf. If I were you I would fit the 150pd Sachs clutch and dual mass flywheel. If you can sell your 5 speed box its a cheap conversion and well worth the money
