I get that mate. Though Iā€™m no expert, from what Iā€™ve learned, there are so many factors to take into when painting, that as a novice itā€™s enough to make you run to the nearest paint shop!
Youā€™re made of sterner stuff, I admire that.

Watch your back Stu, thereā€™s a new kid in town!

 Thanks Pete, but stu has nothing whatsoever to worry about!

Its a ball ache, steep learning curve, easy to balls up, but very rewarding!

Fair play for having a go mate. Looks much better now.

To be honest, just like with anything, if you donā€™t have the professional equipment and the professional products you canā€™t expect the same results as a professional. As long as people except that theyā€™ll never get as good a finish as a professional before undertaking a painting task then they should be happy with the outcome.

With paintwork, itā€™s ok to have a go yourself as there are no real devastating consequences to messing up (unlike mechanical or electrical stuff) but there is a point where financially you might as well pay a pro to do it. For instance, if somebody wants to repair a scuffed bumper corner but doesnā€™t already have any products to use, itā€™d be cheaper to pay a pro to repair it than to buy all the Halfords special aerosol primers, paint, lacquer, masking items, fillers, abrasives, degreaser etc only to then get a vastly inferior job which will likely not match, have little gloss and almost certainly will flake off in a few months.

Quite often I get people requesting a quote for repairs to bumpers. They might feel as though my quote is more than they wanted to pay as ā€œitā€™s only a bumperā€ so they decline my quote and have a go themselves using some aerosol cans bought from Halfords. Then, when it looks shit, they contact me again and ask me to fix the mess that theyā€™ve made. At this point my quote has gone up because what theyā€™ve done is now going to take me another hour to put right before i can start the original repair. :o

Good point made and noted by myself :D
Not even going to attempt my bumper, was going to touch up some scratches temporarily but after a comment on another thread, Iā€™ve looked on groupon and can get two panels scratch repaired for Ā£24 so going with that.... just kidding, they canā€™t be doing a serious job for that surely? Reckon they will add lots to it. Saving up to get the scratches, bumpers and chips done all together. Never going to be a show vehicle but want it to look reasonable if parked near some of you guys.

I get that totally fella.....like my son's car I asked you about....i would never dream of 'having a go' on that, because there is not a chance in hell I'd make it look original..,none!
These caps are only little, and cost me Ā£20 in paint and lacquer...oh, and another fiver on 2000 grit wet and dry. I knew I could get em looking half decent, and the First one is actually pretty good!
I thought I might have learnt better from the First one, but I didnt!

When I come to do my bumper (and I will, but remember, Pat dont pay retail!) ill get it looking right eventually, as ill research it to the N'th degree before attempting it...... And if it looks crap, I can prep it and get someone else to do it, along with my bonnet!

At least I got the base colour undercoat correct this time, thanks to a certain smart repair God!

It was ridiculous.....the police never had a chance to enforce it either. They've made everywhere double red lines now as well, to stop random parking, but they were just ignored, despite tickets being issued!
There was a clip on youtube from a week or so before, where a bloke kicked a girl on the ground, then punched another two!

People arenā€™t good at following rules these days, whether pointless ones or not.
Yes, police are a bit in short supply these days. If the locked up all the dope smokers, the population will halve! Never understand how drugs and alcohol make people violent though.

Well, that was a waste of time.....despite me querying and confirming that the new glass will be a graduated tint, the bloke brings a plain one

So now ill have to go to cambridge, a week today.
Hope the centre console is the correct one now!
