2010 Caddy 1.9TDi

Post by Mike D »

Hello All,
Thought I'd better start a build thread for my van, it's a 2010 SWB Caddy 1.9TDi - It's quite a basic spec but hopefully as this thread progresses a fair bit of that will change :)

I ended up with it through a chance conversation at a wedding while in Cyprus, I have a few cars and was chatting to the Brides Dad, and he mentioned he really needed to get rid of his old work van now he’s retired. I got the info it was a 59 plate Caddy 1.9tdi, 2 owners, 86k.

Fast forward a week and we were back home, so I drove round to have a look. Handily it was only about 2 miles from my house, normally my car collections involve a trip most of the way around the country!

This is what greeted me on the drive – I’d done about 200 miles since its last MOT in 2017 and just sat on the drive since. The battery wouldn’t hold charge so I lobbed a new one in and up she fired. I had a bit of a look around it and it’s actually a pretty tidy van… his mate bought it new, then he bought it with 24k on the clock. Its go a dent in the front wing from a cyclist (oops!) and a small scratch on the passenger rear quarter where the screw holding the ply on the door backed itself out (gutted!)

I picked it up early doors and took it to my mates for a test and it went straight through, can’t grumble at that! I got it home and gave it a good clean out, launched the wilton carpet out the back in the bin, and gave it a wash. It came up pretty well with the exception of the wheels, so a quick wire brush and scotch up, and I broke out the playing cards and silver paint.

Looks loads tidier now

I also can’t stand cheapy plastic steering wheels, luckily I had a spare mk5 Golf GT wheel in my garage I had as a spare for my T4, so I chucked that in as well.

Much better.

Next was to strip the ply out the rear and start sound deadening the panels - I used silentcoat when i did my T4 and it did a great job so that's what i'm using again

many hours and shredded fingers later, the sides and rear doors are all silent coated :)

I'll go over the rear arches and probably the upper van sides with dodo mat van liner as i have some left over :)

The next (and joint most, combined with a good lowering) part was the wheels
13.jpg
Audi Q5 18s :) I run these on the T4 too, if they can handle that they should be more than capable of supporting the caddy. Tyres are a bit baloony though so i'll get them swapped over for something more suitable

My coilover kit arrived the other week so I set about fitting it. WHAT A WAR! I got the back done but had the usual issue of the rear wheels sitting too far forward in the arches, so I knocked up some spacer plates on my lunch break at work and chucked them on.

The fronts put up a whole other level of pain for me! Who thought putting the strut tops behind the bulkhead and wiper linkage was a good idea
19.jpg
Passenger side came out with a reasonable struggle - the drivers side was a world of hell. The pic below should illustrate the grief
20.jpg
The captive nuts on the top mount were spinning, I chopped as much of the strut away as I could so I could get a socket on them, but they arent a real nut so just kept spinning. I had to get the trusty chisel out and butcher the bolts off the top in the end.

It was worth it though :) All fitted and adjusted, wheels on, and some new pressed plates

Looking good mate! I like the looks of it. How much was the coilover kit? And how does it feel now? The ride is not too harsh when you pass over bumps?

The coilover kits are about 690 with new top mounts, the ride is good, apart from the rears wheels doing a bit of a dance about in the arches. I'm making some braces for the rear drop plates to try and improve it a bit, I imagine it'll ultimately require poly bushing. :)

I knocked up some shackle braces earlier in the week to try and stop the rear axle flapping around in the rear arches, fitted them Tuesday evening and it has made a pretty significant improvement :) I think ultimately i'll end up polybushing it but these have helped.

Sizes are below if anyone finds them useful:
OD - 28mm
ID - 13.5mm
Length - 85mm
Material - Aluminium (can be steel if you like i just did this for lightness)
Bolts I used were M12 x120mm long GR8.8 with nyloc nuts and washers

Cheers,
Mike :)

I also ordered a few bits to brighten up the interior. First to arrive were some heater dial replacements

Only a little job but it brightens up the inside a bit :)

I also bought some seats out a 2008 Audi A4 S-Line, I'd heard they were just a 'drill 2 extra bolt holes in the caddy bases' job to fit, but they aren't, so i'm doing a bit of fab work to allow them to slot in. I'll update this once I've done it :)
