'Park it in a hedge' Spec Maxi

Post by chris577612 »

Been meaning to put this up for a while.. Got myself a 2008 Maxi early last year. Done the main stuff now just a few final bits on the list..

Aim was to build a cheapish van I could use for bike trips or odd nights away.. Didn't want anything I'd have to be too precious about. Few advert pics as it was when I got it. Few dings and wear from trade use but generally solid.. ImageImageImageImage

Started by stripping it out and giving it a clean.. Sorted a few bits of rust etc. Then deadened the bigger panels and put in some recycled plastic insulation. Used the blue hose as conduit for lighting.ImageImageImage

Next 25mm celotex bonded to the flat panels and cut some batons to friction fit the lips on the walls so I could fix panels lafer..Image

Finished insulating the ceiling and walls with bubble foil over the lot then got the carpet on the walls. Made some fixing points on one side for my bike and the electrics in. 110ah agm battery and gubbins under the rear of the passenger seat. Supplying one USB point on each wall in the back, a 12v cigarette point in the back of the centre console if I want a little fridge later, one usb point near the overhead shelf and some ceiling lights. Got hold of some pallets to cover the wall panels. Have left them as they come at the moment had intended to finish them somehow so may or may not do that in future..

Then on to the ceiling.. Got a UK map blanket and cut out front.. Made some new hardboard panels and stuck on some scrim foam headlining.. And mocked it up with lights.. Excuse the carpet. ImageImageImageImageImage

Ceiling up.. Did it in a bit of a hurry on the lawn on a very windy day! So far from perfect finish but there we go.. Should have been more careful with the spray glue as some came through.. Also worked out afterwards that as I'd made new hardboard ceiling panels I could have missed out the middle rail.. MVM ceiling fixings are very strong.. Only a couple would loosely hold even this heavy panel up..

In those pics is an internal rear door handle courtesy of ebay and an 18mm ply floor with 10mm foil face foam roll mats below for insulation.. Also had a go at cutting the bulkhead back which was much easier than I thought it would be..

Cheers Image Plenty of ideas and info off here along the way.

So next the flooring went down along with a new rear threshold trim. I took the original vw tie down points up and reinstalled them with longer bolts so they are now tie down points and securing the floor at the same time. None of the screws in the alu corner trims go into the van itself.ImageImageImage

Next job was to box out the left hand arch. I wanted to be able to lean a mtb up against it without worrying about damaging carpet and have taken the jack mount off so needed somewhere to hide that.

I bonded the ply to the arch to minimise screwed fixings.. Then covered it in vinyl and alu trim. The section ahead of the arch lifts out with storage below. Also means the wall panel still pops off no trouble.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Finally finished the pallet wood panels.. Took quite a while as I had to shape each piece. Probably not worth the hastle?!

Also stripped the rear windows of plasticote and had them tinted which I am chuffed with.ImageImageImageImageImage
