Nz R36 build....

Post by deluxedetailnz » Fri Aug 28, 2020 7:37 am

So welcome to my build....I'm originally from the uk but have been living out In New Zealand for 6 years now. I have a busy detailing bussiness (@deluxedetailnz on insta) and I've bought myself a white (only colour choice in nz pretty much) 1.2tsi short wheel base caddy and a rear ended R36 wagon with 100,00kms on it....So long story short my unit is right inbetween some of Nz's best volkswagen and audi specialists so im blaming them for this idea ImageImage

I picked up the van sight unseen from christchurch about a month ago with 108,000km and in pretty rough shape.
However I'm going to be wetsanding the whole exterior so im not massively worried about that at the moment.
So far I've ripped the interior out and have started converting all the headliner and pillars to black and lining the back of it in seude.
I've also fitted an eibach sportline lowering kit today and happy with the way it sits as it will be used for a daily and work. Also the r36 engine an box weighs an extra 100kg over what I have at the mo so we'll see how it looks once the engines in.
I've booked the van to be colour coded soon and the wetsanding all begin ....

This sounds like the start of an interesting build! I’ll be keeping an eye on this one.
Will you go 4wd with this?
Hef355 has just completed an r36 conversion in his. His build thread is definitely worth a read.

This looks like an interesting build to watch. Do you need to homologate the engine swap? I heard everything is permited in New Zeeland, sky is the limit😁
Good luck with the build👍

It does have to be certified by the nz transport authorities however it should be an easy process as nothing is being cut upImage

YAY! More VR6 wierdos!

I'm a bit far away (Whangarei), but I have a manual R32 drivetrain in my Touran, 4WD and all.

I guess the M guys know what they're doing anyway.

The trickiest bit is probably going to be the manual conversion on the electronics side. Mechanically, everything pretty much bolts in! You should be able to use all the aluminium suspension in the front, and the big brakes too.

The cert shouldn't present any problems - mine was complicated by the 4WD - the engine itself doesn't cause any issues, but I had a custom alloy fuel tank, bracing, modified rear floor and subframe.

Keep the 4WD bits... just in case you want to go really silly later  Getting the floor mods certed on a caddy might be really tricky over here though!

Should be a bit more fun than the 1.2

Keep us updated!!!!!!!!!

Cheers Mate,
Yeah electronics is going to be the hardest part of it all.
looking forward to getting started properly on it soon.
My rear ended r36 should be down with me from chrustchurch in the next few weeks so hopefully i can start on dismantling it and gauging the fitting of the seats ect to start with until i'm ready to start the engine swap.
Project has taken a slight turn in the last couple days and now the car is booked in for a full respray and colour change
i decided to grab the opportunity to paint it whilst the engine is out! VERY EXCITING!!!!

So R36 brakes and wheels are on , the wheels are temporary as the steelies won't fit over the calipers but yet to choose what wheels I want.

I also tried some 19" passat r line wheels on with 235,40 tyres and they fitted perfectly.... note I only have a 1.2tsi engine atm which weighs a measly 97kg , front end will drop 10mm once the 3.6 is in ImageImageImageImage

So I managed to pick up a set of audi speedlines in 19x8.5 et48 in Nz they are so hard to find probably under 50 sets in the country . I took them to my local engineer and he's machined the faces for me .......and im beyond stoked at how good they look. Barrels are off being machine blasted and I can't wait to get them together....

Also of other good news the 1.2tsi is coming out of the caddy on the 27th and the build is started on the 5th . .I'll post some pictures once I get started ImageImageImageImageImageImage
