My Tatty Caddy

Post by scratcher »

I've finally got myself a Caddy after years of wanting one.
I'd never needed a van but the man maths said it was cheaper as a daily driver than my ST170 estate

The van has already had a few nice bits done to it. It was put together by the owner of a local VAG specialist so although rough around the edges, it was super good mechanically.

Here's the van as I got it.

Image20201117_154152 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

Bits it's had done,

Touran front end
New wings
V Maxx coilovers
Golf GTI mk5 brakes all round
Remapped
Side exit exhaust
Mk6 GTI stereo
Mk7 Golf R seats on Touran bases

Engine wise it's had an EGR delete, new cam shaft, sensors, belts, umps and pulleys.

There's a few other bits that I can't remember off the top of my head.

It'll be a bit liberating having the van and keeping it a bit tatty on the outside. I usually search high and low for a car, spend loads getting it perfect and then move on. It'll be nice to not be afraid to leave it in a car park

The first job for the Caddy - clean the interior.
A good 14 years worth of grimy mitts all over the dash and door cards.

I got scrubbing with a few brushes.

Top side of the hand brake lever cleaned

This is the dirt that came from the dash, door cards and centre console.

Cleaned

Then onto the headlining and seats.
Didn't get any photos of the top bits.

The dirt pulled from the passenger seat base.

Clean and fresh :)

All dried out.

I'd like to do the Touran carpets at some point, and maybe the door cards too but I haven't looked at the options for windy windows.

A quick clean up with some all purpose cleaner.

Image20201119_112750 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

Image20201119_112919 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

Window rubbers were full of crud.

Image20201119_113034 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

Getting better.

Image20201119_135245 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

The guy I bought the car from welded the sill and bunged some stone chip stuff on it.
Blasted any loose bits off with an airline.

Image20201127_144436 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

The old door roller had fallen to bits so a new one was fitted.

Image20201125_090655 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

Image20201125_092517 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

A little bit of clearance over the wheel.

Image20201125_092037 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

The door shut needs some tudying up at a later date.

Image20201125_092030 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

Quickly rubbed down the sill and wings and got busy with a rattle can
It's supposed to be the right colour (matched from the colour code on the fuse box) so it might look better if the rest is cleaned up properly.

Before

After

Image20201127_151403 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

Image20201127_151445 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

The windscreen kept getting super wet too... turns out there were no buns in the roof rail holes.
The sound deadening under the floor was dry so that's a bonus.

Cut up some bits of paint protection film.

Image20201127_153437 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

Trimmed - that should keep it good for a little while. Plugs are on order.

Image20201127_153733 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

That's it up until now :)

Yeah, it makes a huge difference. It was just metal on metal before and horrible to open and close.
Now it's silky smooth.

The Caddy would've had 280 front and 260 discs on the rear.
The GTI ones are 312 front, 280 rear.
They definitely stop the van quickly.

I wasn't keen on the wheel colour at first but it's growing on me.

The temptation is there to polish it over Christmas, but the paint really is terrible.
Whoever took the old sign writing off was in a hurry and took half the lacquer with it. Pretty much the only panel without lacquer peel is the passenger door :(

The rattle can job was left inside over the weekend.
The colour match isn't too bad out in the daylight :)

Cheers bud :)

The handbrake was grim. I wish I took a photo of it before I started. It was brown all the way around.

I used ODK Wax Encore and a steamer on the interior plastics.
Finished off with ODK Cabin. Smells lovely now 8)

It's been a while since I've really done anything with the Caddy.

I bought an Aux lead so now I can listen to Spotify in the van :) just a cheap and cheerful ebay job. Plugged in the head unit nice and easy.
I'd like to swap the little tray under the ash tray for a later one so I can have a nice Aux socket.
Does anyone know if the ASR switch from a later model plugs straight in or is there some wire swapping to be done?

And since I can't leave anything alone, I stated trying to make it look less tatty, while still being a bit tatty

Number plate off, ready for a good clean.

Image20210115_130304 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

Cleaned off lots of old glue residue.

Image20210115_134359 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

And got busy with some vinyl.

Image20210115_170652 by Richard Lewin, on Flickr

Just the bumper and wing (mostly) done for now.
I need to polish the sides of the van and I can get some vinyl on there too. It's covered in swirls and buffer trails and it'll bug me seeing it through the gaps in the camo.

WOW do you want to clean mine??

Amazing job, what did you use on the door cards, centre console and dash?

this van is coming along nicely, I keep looking at wrapping but I'm unsure.

Loving this one though, good job!

Keep posting updates, I'm interested to see how this turns out.
