I bought the cheapest running Caddy I could find .

Post by Zeberdeecaddy » Sun Feb 14, 2021 11:37 am

So this is a build thread for my cheap Caddy .

It’ll probably go quite slowly to start with , as i have plenty of other projects on the go .

I paid £1200 for it & drove it 60 miles home , noting only a couple of issues , but i’m sure there’s more hidden .

It’s got 200k on the clock , but has a replacement engine that i’m told has around 120k on it .
Seems to run quietly & smooth (for a diesel) , but does smoke under hard acceleration .

Known issues ,

Broken mirror , new glass on order .
Heater doesn’t get hot , i hope this is due to a stuck open stat . This also might help the smoke ??
Wiper blades damaged , need the arms adjusting as it goes off the screen .
Heater motor only working on full , new resistor on order .
Hole in the roof from looks like a roof sign fitted . Gorilla tape over that , a job for the summer .
Gearbox stiff into 1st 2nd , hopefully a linkage issue .
Also will need a full service .

First jobs will focus on getting it through an mot , then re assess & make a list of important jobs .

Definitely has potential .

Hopefully it won’t cost much to get the basics right , then that leaves me with more money for fun purchases .

:D

it looks good for £1200 and 200k mile. Is that your Scirocco behind it too?

That is a cracking daily. You don't see many of these around anymore.

How long have you had it?

I only got it October .

My old van got wrote off after an old boy did a U turn in front of me .

It was only ment to be a stop gap until all the insurance is sorted , until then I can’t afford to insure a van again .

But I really like it , had a couple of MK2 gti’s , big & small bumper . Also had a MK1 gti . This is defiantly now a keeper .

Hopefully i can get the Caddy somewhere near it .

Although also have an old Beetle I’m rebuilding , so the Caddy will be a slow transformation

You defirnitely have to keep hold of that if you can. I love the old VW stuff, I've never had a Mk1 Golf or a Scirocco but have had 5 mk 2s, 2 Mk3s, 1 Mk4, 2 Mk5s, a Mk6 and now a Mk7 (and a caddy). A good Mk1 Gti is now mental money so that won't be happening.

Can’t beat an older VW .

Hopefully I’ll bond with the caddy in the same way
