New van problem with overboost?
Hi there
Unfortunately i have a problem with my new van purchased 2 weeks ago its a 09 caddy 1.9tdi BLS engine 72k
im after some advice on the best course of action im really happy with the van and would like to keep it but im getting what sounds like stuck vanes on the turbo, yesterday when accelerating to get on the motorway i had a sudden loss of power around 65mph then went in to limp mode turned the vehicle on then off and it was back to normal tested again on the motorway and same again when accelerating at 65mph went in to limp mode but the engine light also came on this time
I contacted the garage yesterday but there are not open till Monday and about 30 mins away so he asked me if i was able to get it diagnosed at a local garage to see if it was something simple.
Ive took it to a local garage this morning and asked them to see what the fault codes were
P3007 - Camshaft sensor; no signal
- Intermittent
P2034 - Charge pressure control; Regulating limit surpassed
- Permanent
they couldn't see any pipes loose (the garage suggested to look see if the boost pipe had popped off)
im wondering what would be the best thing to do before taking it to the garage tomorrow i dont want them to do a quick fix but also Im not expecting a brand new oem turbo
plus theres the camshaft sensor? it had the cambelt replaced at 59k Dec 2015
i may be getting ahead of myself and they will gladly sort the problems out
but should i be asking for a reconditioned turbo and new Camshaft sensor?
a friend suggested you can get a full refund within 30 days if the van is not fit for purpose i really dont want the headache with that but it could be a good bargaining tool lol
Many thanks James

Re: New van problem with overboost?
Hi James,
Was there any G number sensors read alongside those fault codes?
Is the turbo vnt actuator lever free to move up and down?
Are all the vacuum hoses in good condition?
Was there any strange noises coming from the turbo on spool up before going into limp home mode?

thanks for the reply's guys
@Bionicman
hi mate
no G number sensor read
i have tried to move the vnt acuator lever but access was really difficult i put a pair of needle nose pliers on it but i dont think i was getting enough leverage
the vacuum hoses look in really good condition
i didn't notice any strange noises from the turbo before limp mode (but probably wasn't paying attention)
its out of limp mode now with the faults cleared but haven't taken it on the motorway again
@Liam
hi Liam
are so it could possibly be a blocked EGR vale!
did you get any fault codes or engine light come on?
many thanks james

Re: New van problem with overboost?
it wasnt a vw but was a tdi
yes it would go into limp mode under heavy acceleration and bring on an engine management light - it would always happen when the turbo was putting out a lot of boost
and in my case turning off the van and back on would reset the limp mode and it would go again until you did the same thing again ! and yes it wasnt a vw in my case so turning off and on may not rectify egr limp mode on caddy but it does sound very similar

Re: New van problem with overboost?
Bit of a belated update but had the van in on Friday diagnosed as carbon build up on the turbo vanes they tried cleaning it with vane cleaner cough (Mr mussel) but didn't work so back in today to take the turbo of and take it to a local specialist to clean.
I'll update how I get on

Not to bad then. At least turbo should spool up like a new one when cleaned. Hope they give the turbo a total refurb and not just clean the vnt

Re: New van problem with overboost?
Picked the van up this morning said they tested a couple of times and problem fixed "but" if it happens again they will take the turbo off and clean it so they didn't take the turbo off like they said they would same problem happend on the way home limp mode
I was prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt but it's obvious they are just trying to do a quick fix. I text them and they said book it in when suits me to get the turbo removed and cleaned
The trouble is I've lost confidence in them to do a proper job stripping and cleaning it. It's turning into a bit of a nightmare lol I work for myself so van off the road is lost money
How would I be able to tell if they had stripped and cleaned the turbo?
Would I be able to get a local specialist to do the job and claim on the warranty? comes with a 12 months warranty with WMS group if its worth the paper it's written on lol
Any advice appreciated Cheers James

Re: New van problem with overboost?
Contact your warranty people, explain the problem you are having and ask for it in writing if they will cover any/all costs.
They might have a preferred supplier and only pay a percentage of you go elsewhere.

Re: New van problem with overboost?
Yes Doc is right, I would be straight on the phone to WMS warranty group and see what there advise is to do next. Also see if you can get a loan vehicle for your business as yours if off the road until it is fixed properly. Hope you get it sorted pretty quick mate.

Re: New van problem with overboost?
Good morning
A quick update no luck with WMS group I'm afraid they said it's was up to the stealer to sort the problem out ah bugar worth a try though. I don't want to go through the hassle of trying to get a refund under the 30 days law (I might have too) but could I use this as a bargaining tool to see if they would pay a local specialist to refurb the turbo?
I will call a couple of places to get a quote
Many thanks James
