Thinking of buying a DSG... thoughts?

I’m contemplating selling my 1.6 TDI manual for and changing it for one of the same engine, but has a few extras, dual zone climate control being the main upgrade to my non air conditioned model, but the one I’ve seen is also the 7 speed twin dry clutch DSG. The van is on 70k miles and with the gearbox being a sealed unit has never been serviced, but both engine and gearbox have been remapped. What are people’s thought or experiences with buying a van at this mileage with this gearbox? I’ve read lots of mixed opinions online but some first hand experience would be great. Cheers guys

I don’t have any experience with this set up, but one thing I will say is I’m not a believer in this “sealed for life” malarkey. If you do buy it, get the oil, and if need be, the filter changed in the ‘box right away. Then change every 40,000 miles or so. Oil degrades with use and age IMO.

My 1.6 dsg has 150k on it now, my van from 2k and Ive really looked after it however the dmf went @ 60k and 70k the clutch started to slip @ 120k the mechatronics pissed fluid out (pressurised) and needed replacing.

The above are all common issues and you need to take into account when buying a DSG @ that sort of mileage, if they have not been replaced at some stage they will fail.

Clutch is dry, box sealed for life regardless what other think, you don't need to replace the oil.

Best thing I ever did is egr and dpf deleted and a remap, it's been a very good van and I'm really loathed to part with it even tho I have a new van I'm still using the caddy instead.

Is the 6 speed wet clutch much of an improvement over the old box?

The 6 speed wet clutch is the old box. The dry clutch 7 speed is the latest version.

That’s great thanks for the help guys, ding dong how were any of those repairs stupid money or just general running bills? I’ve heard Repairs to dsg can get expensive fast! And that’s interesting doc, I was under the impression that the 7 speed dry clutch was the old for lower powered vehicles, the 6 speed wet clutch was the old version for the higher powered vehicles and the new one was a 7 speed wet clutch?

@Andy, Darkside fitted a new Dmf, egr and dpf delete and remapped it and I think the invoice was around £1400-£1500

Darkside later fitted a clutch pack, around £1000

Dsg matchtronics from vw is about £3k I had an indi Auto box specialist in keyworth Notts suoply and fit for £1700

I would not hesitate to buy another Dsg in fact I bought a new manual van last sept and bloody hate it, ive done 1k in the vehicle since sept but much prefer the Dsg.

Has anyone had dmf rattle/spring failure on their mk4 dsg yet?

Mines a 2016/66 plate with 36k miles and when its in park or neutral its developing a rattle, put it in drive and its silent. When the engines warmed up it doesnt rattle in park or neutral.

Wonder if Vw will do it under good will? (Highly unlikely)

Got a 7 speed dsg, 1.6tdi 2011

CADDY2K.com
