Re: Skully's '17 Caddy Maxi
Thanks!
Actually quite comfortable on the highway at normal cruising speeds (120kmh here in South Africa).
On harsh bumps or crappy speedbumps, the front is quite hard, but not bone-jarrinly hard.
The rear used to be quite bouncy, but that has been sorted.
Some updates:
Installed this soon after I got the Caddy:
It is nice and "hidden" there.
Hard pipe kit was fitted.
What a crap job getting to the one bolt behind the aircon compressor, but it is done.
The map sensor on the OEM plastic pipe sits behind the aircon compressor and on the Darkside kit it sits on the opposite side of the pipe and will be much easier to get to in case it ever needs replacing.
Next step will be finding an S3 intercooler, but that can wait until funds have built up.
I forgot about this one, here is a pic of what the Caddy used to look like in it's previous life:
I had to replace the headunit due to the old one freezing up regularly for some reason and being a bitch in general.
SO decided to treat me and got me a Kenwood DNX 5180 S headunit. Chuffed as hell.
Works perfectly and SQ is tons better than the old DDX418BT HU.
Had to re-tweak the amp settings so I removed the passenger seat to make it easier and to get some cleaning done:
That amp kicks serious butt and it has not given a single hassle. It is really small but packs a serious punch.
And my bike loaded for the Kyalami track day on the 5th September. I just love the versatility of the Caddy:
And the wheels were repainted dark anthracite in matte:
Got some helper springs for the rear suspension.
MAD Suspension kit that took half an hour to install (no modification of anything, just the bumpstop gets removed and refitted) and it is MUCH better now.
No more bouncy rear end over speed bumps and feels so much more planted on the road, and it only drops down around 10mm when loaded with a 180kg bike and all my gear for a track day.
Got the kit from SportsVans here in Pta:

Even more usable as it was designed to do, and that was carry loads. I am happy.

Re: Skully's '17 Caddy Maxi
Update on rear helper springs:
1: Much better comfort on highways. No more bouncing ass when going over dips or bumps.
2: Much more stable in tighter curves and when going around corners.
3: Can carry 300kg and the back sags about 20mm, but does not bottom out against the cut down bump stops over speed bumps and crap roads (helped a friend move some stuff, including a safe that weighs 200kg).
Yesterday's ambient temp by us during the glorious well needed rain here in South Africa (the temp on Tuesday was 37 degrees C here, so a 21 degree drop was madness):
As can be seen, some very decent fuel consumption. I filled up in Welkom and drove home to Pretoria, a 300km one way trip and this was the odo reading when I got home yesterday afternoon.
And a wet Caddy:

Re: Skully's '17 Caddy Maxi
Really nice build. I’ve enjoyed reading the build progress. We’ve just had rear seat conversion in ours and converted a standard reflex silver panel van into a Kombi pretty much same as yours with all the genuine floor coverings etc.
I’ve noticed on your b pillar some coat hooks. We’ve ordered a few from vw but keep getting sent the wrong ones. The ones on yours look correct.
Is there any chance you’d be able to get a part number off them for me?
Thanks

Sirus in Wednesbury uk. They did the conversion. Details can be found on their website.
Also if you do a search there’s plenty of info on here.
Cheers
