2012 Maxi Build

Post by Humphrey106 »

Complete newby to VWs so this is going to be a 'learn whilst I go sort of thing'. Purchased a white 2012 Maxi on Sunday. The van has previously been used as a work van for a guy who owns a blind fitting company, so no massively heavy loads. The rear is ply lined but I'm going to rip it all out and start fresh. On the whole the van is in very good condition.

This weekend I'm hoping to pick up some Audi A1 seats, take the roof rack off, rip out all the ply, install sound deadening and insulation in the rear.

Looking fwd to picking your brains as I go.ImageImageImage

That van is in remarkably good condition for one that's had a blind man driving it. :D
Look forward to seeing your progress with it.

I bloody knew that joke would be coming Image. After all the DIY mods I've planned on making it will probably look like it's been done by a blind manImage.

I grew up with a local blind man with a mk2 escort rally car and he had "CAUTION - Blind man driving" on the back, I couldn't resist.

I'm sure you'll do some decent handy work on it, or at least photograph it in a way where we don't pick up on it. :P

Starting with a few small mods.

1) The head unit trim was badly scuffed so for now I have wrapped it in a cheap carbon fibre look film. By no means permanent but it's less of an eye sore than it was before.

2) Installed Team Heko wind deflectors.

3) 3rd brake light was looking a bit tatty so replaced with a tinted lens.

Hoping to have a few more cheap mods delivered today.

On a side note does anybody know where I can get a can of genuine VW paint from? Looking for colour code LB9A.ImageImageImage

Latest mods.

1. New chrome heater rings and knobs. (If anybody has any tips for these rings to stay in place then please let me know)

2. Swapped the horrible stock seats for some Audi A1 seats. Never been a fan of full leather seats so happy with these. Very easy to fit, just 4 spline bolts (10mm) holding the stock seats in place and a straight swap.

3. Ripped out all the old ply and installed lots of sound deadening panels with insulation panels as well as fleece insulation. Was very time consuming but wanted to do a proper job so didn't cut any corners.

Going to insulate the floor and install fresh carpet and ply next week.ImageImageImageImage

So the new wheels have gone on. They are genuine VW ones that have come from a Golf R32. They've instantly changed the look of the van. I've also taken the roof bars off.

Yesterday I took the van to be completely ply lined and carpeted throughout. I'm hoping the current pandemic isn't going to delay things. All being well should be ready to pick up on Thursday evening. ImageImage

So I managed to pick up some vinyl tiles from a friend of mine that I will lay over the ply floor when I get the van back. Theres 3 different shades of grey (only 2 pictured) so will hopefully look good with the charcoal carpet I have chosen.

I got a bit arty farty and cut the VW badge out of one of the darker tiles. My plan is to embed this into one of the lighter tiles. Quite pleased with how it looks so far. Will hopefully look good when it all gets laid in the next few days.ImageImage

I'm just about to start the sound proofing (one of many parts), there's some in the back of mine but is still seems noisy.
Did you have much to begin with and have you noticed a decent change?
Cheers

Hi mate. There was the odd bit of sound proofing already in mine (not really enough to make much of a difference). I added as much new sound proofing as I could, including new stuff over the top of the old stuff. I used really good quality stuff and didn't cut any corners (as tedious and boring as it was). I could notice a difference after all the insulation went over the top of the sound deadening, but was a bit disappointed. However after the ply and carpet went in, it improved significantly and now there isn't much difference from a car!

So I've been busy over the past week with various mods.

1. Installed some fresh ply and carpeted the rear. I mounted a thick 20mm rectangle of ply to the shell of the roof and then put the new ply ceiling and carpet over the top of that. This is to mount a flip down screen to it in the future. It'll hopefully make it a but more sturdy to screw into.

2. I laid the new floor and just used some contact adhesive to stick down the tiles. I also laid the VW badge but am not a fan as it doesn't quite fit flush and looks a but tatty from my bad cutting. So will replace this with just another plain tile.

3. I spent today wiring up 2 leisure batteries behind the passenger seat. This is run via a Voltage sensitive relay so they charge when the vehicle ignition is running. Was such a pain in the arse trying to find the best place to feed the cable from the engine bay into passenger foot well but eventually found the rubber grommet and it was all quite easy from there. I put some ply wood down and attached the leisure batteries and the VSR to that. I'm thinking of making some sort of cover to sit over the top of the batteries, just to hide it all a bit better.

4. The UPS man delivered the Audi TT vents I bought from Ebay so I had a crack at one of those. Will finish the rest off tomorrow. Hopefully my spot lights, as well as USB points and other electrical goods will arrive in the next couple of days, so this will keep me busy whilst we are in lock down.ImageImageImageImage

Looks good. Just ordered the rubber liner for the floor and edge. Got the carpet for the sides, bulkhead and roof. Just on the look for a way to make a plastic sliding window for the bulkhead to make it much warmer.
