2006 1.9 TDI Volkswagen Caddy
Hi everyone,
Thought it was about time to introduce my latest project. This time, my first van! A Volkswagen Caddy.
I currently own a MK7 Oryx White Golf R. I had a little seat arosa s as a second car for around a year which I then sold to a friend for what I paid for it back in September when I bought the Caddy.
I work as a Wholetime Firefighter and back in September trained as a Locksmith to start a business to do in my spare time. I wanted a van for my tools and also because of the practicality of them. A volkswagen caddy was always at the top of the list, so I got looking on the usual sites and found this van only 10 miles from home so arranged a viewing and test drive and subsequently made an offer which was accepted.
The van;
2006 Volkwsagen Caddy 1.9 tdi
104ps
109,000
18" Alloys
Used by a painter and decorator as you might see:doublesho
Initial Pictures
Initial Interior Clean
Seats out
Hoovered and cleaned up
The same was repeated on the passenger side.
The previous owner had put ply lined covers on the barn doors on the back which were looking a little tatty.
Removed revealing the original boards
The two VW's together
Rear view mirror
As the caddy has the back windows covered the previous owner had tilted the mirror to try and hide it.
A simple twist and it was off
Much better
As my commute is 23 miles each way to work and I figured I will be spending some time in the van going to jobs I wanted to improve the interior and make it a little more comfortable.
The first purchase, some MK5 GTI Seats
Passenger seat and drinks holder out
Both seats out
The caddy came with rubber matting for the floors, they look nice when they are clean and are very functional however the work I do is not that dirty so again wanted the van to feel a little more comfortable inside so decided to swap them out for a set of Touran front carpets. These are a direct fit like most parts and make the cabin a little nicer and also warmer.
Reverse order but carpets fitted
Touran arm rest also fitted
GTI Steering Wheel
The next part of the puzzle was to swap the rubber steering wheel for a leather one and seen as though the GTI one was a direct fit I thought why not!
Shiny
Cleaned up with the great Dr Leather Cleaner
Touran Midline Clocks and Cruise Control
One thing that I thought that the caddy was missing was cruise control. My journey to works involves lots of 50mph roads so cruise control in my opinion is a must. I got in touch with Guy at midlands coding, he came out to me and fitted Touran midline clocks, cruise control and an mfd stalk so I can see, water temperature, mpg, distance to empty and a trip computer. A great guy and very knowledgable in what he does.
Standard caddy clocks
Midline clocks fitted
Clocks and steering wheel fitted

Re: 2006 1.9 TDI Volkswagen Caddy
Winter Alloys
On the past few cars I have always ran a set of winter alloys, I was never a fan of the black 18" Audi alloys that came with the van. I got looking on the caddy forum for some wheel inspiration and decided on a set of 17" Passat Monte Carlo alloys. I then found a set on ebay in Stoke with winter tyres on already with really good tread so made a bid and collected them a few days later.
Fitted on the van
Rear clear out
As the van will be used for my Locksmith business and also maybe the occasional nights camping I decided I wanted to get the rear, sound proofed, insulated and carpet lined. A fairly local company put out a black friday deal on the forum which included all of the above and led lighting.
I then decided to tidy out the rear before taking it to him.
Floor out
Hoovered, cleaned with grime out and then a final wipe down with ipa.
I then dropped the van off and he took me to the train station and I made the trip to Meadowhall to kill some time.
LED's in the roof with the switch on the left hand side.
Bulkhead out as I decided to get that carpet lined both sides, this was down to; security, road noise and then also warmth.
I also had the interior trims swapped out to the newer darker panels to match the grey carpet.
The Final Pictures
New step panel
Bulk head
Ultra flush LED lights
Inside of the cabin
A before and after pic
While the van was there I bought along a set of touran door cards with electric window motors. These are a highly popular mod for the caddy as it gets rid of the wind up windows:thumb: He then wired them up for me and fitted them.
Summer Alloys
As I now have winter alloys for the Caddy, I decided to put my S4 winter alloys that I had for the Golf up for sale. A couple of weeks later I got a message asking I fancied a swap for a set of VW Lugano alloys off a scirocco. The guy also a Firefighter had just bought a golf r and wanted a set of winter alloys for it and he had a spare set a wheels from his old passat cc. We made a deal and met half way in Northampton.
Prior to agreeing I had a look around to see what they would look like on a Caddy and found the following;
Wheels collected
I then had a quick trial fit to see what they looked like on my van
Hopefully before I get them fitted I will have had the van lowered.

Re: 2006 1.9 TDI Volkswagen Caddy
Service Time
So on Friday me and a friend gave the caddy a full service including;
Oil
Oil filter
Sump plug
Air filter
Pollen filter
Fuel filter
All parts picked up from my local tps apart from the oil which was from Opie.
Borrowed my friends drive so got the caddy up on the ramps to save time, good thing about the caddy is that everything is on the top apart from the sump plug which makes it easy to maintain.
Old air filter not looking too bad initially:lol:
Always nice having genuine parts
Air filter housing was fairly dirty
Hoovered out
Oil filter removed
New one going in with the seal being coated in fresh oil before hand
Fuel filter housing
Pollen filter removed
New vs old
I think the cabin filter hadn't been changed for a while as out of them all I would say it was the most fiddly to change. The cabin now seems to get even warmer than before but not sure if that's just my mind.
No more big updates coming just yet as I am in the process of setting the business but I will try and keep the mods continual.

Looks like a decent base van and you've made a cracking start on it too!

Re: 2006 1.9 TDI Volkswagen Caddy
I then purchased a Touran off eBay that I would use for parts for the van and parts to sell to get my money back
As the touran is a non runner I arranged with a local transport guy to pick up the car and transport it to a friends house who has a big drive and has allowed me use it. This worked out a lot better than insuring the car for a day and taxing it.
A real bonus I did not know about, genuine rubber Volkswagen mats
Beneath the rubber mats the carpets were like new, this should make selling them a little easier
I also picked up a new tool set that I had been looking at for a long time, even better with a trade card!
I ended up paying £475 for the Touran. When taking out the seats I found a little bit of money.
£1.49 back
I briefly fitted the mats in the caddy to see what they looked like, they fit perfectly
Front seat and seat bases out
Much neater dash in comparison to my caddy one in my opinion
Couldn't resist not making any changes to the van so made a quick switch up
After
Darker, uniformed look now
(foot panel will be changed to the darker colour)
How I finished up tonight

Old dash
Old and new trim
Touran dash
I then swapped the foot rest to match the rest

All back in place

Re: 2006 1.9 TDI Volkswagen Caddy
Few more updates on the Caddy.
The Touran as it stands at the minute
Another little bonus from the touran - rubber door cards insert, I took these out before I sold the door cards as I thought i'd have them for the Caddy
Cleaned up
Finally got round to giving the interior a clean, rubber mats cleaned with grime out twice and jet washed, dash board given a good going over, carpets hoovered and glass cleaned. Finally added my coconut Mr Zogs air freshener
As I was planning on using the touran bumper and grill I decided to get rid of the plastidip.
Trim removed
For the badge I removed it, soaked it in white spirit for a couple of hours which did the trick.
How the whole grill turned out
I plan to wrap the lower chrome grill in gloss black so it is nice and subtle and keep the VW badge chrome so it looks OEM. Like this one;
Today I had a go at fitting the Touran Bumper to give me an idea of how it will look.
Next on the agenda, wrap the grill black and split the touran headlights down.

That's a great van, loads of good improvents done to it too. I like the Touran dash swap and GTI seats, it looks a nice place to be for a commute.

Loving the build & looking forward to further updates. Thanks also for the lead on the Touran door card rubber inserts. I knew they
existed but had no idea of the source. Just shows how useful this forum is. Keep up the good work & I hope you are on good terms
with your bank manager!

Good swaps, love the photos of before and after
Do you still have the rear seats to the Touran?
