Swan’s caddy build

Post by the swan fiend »

Hi Doc, hope you’re well mate. I’ve started the van, and tried the pedal with the reservoir topped up and I have no fault lights on the dash so I assume everything is ok regarding the ABS system?
However the brakes are spongy so there must be air in there somewhere still.
I’ll have to bleed them again.

The ABS system won't show a fault if it's got air in, you'll just have a spongy pedal that won't bleed.
Be careful if you have to drive life that.

Yep.....it looks like my ABS needs bleeding. I’ve re bled the system on all corners and there’s no air coming through but I’ve still got the spongy pedal. Thanks for the heads up Doc, I’d have gone through gallons of brake fluid trying to bleed it otherwise!!

Have you got someone on hand that could pump the pedal? Pressure bleeders are rubbish at forcing trapped air out as it just doesnt flow enough

I imagine that theres air stuck in the rear calipers as the bleed nipple isn't at the highest point, sometimes you can unbolt the caliper from the carrier and hold it so the nipple it at the highest point (to the sky) then just crack the nipple off and air should work it's way out with no pumping. May have to do it a couple of times but theres not much else going on so worth a try! Good luck

Cheers mate. I think I could do with bleeding the master cylinder too. Only I’m not sure how.......or even where exactly it is!!

Master is under the bit you fill with fluid, long tube type thing with 2 pipes off. But doubt it has bleed nipples, some older golfmk4s etc had 7mm bleed points on the master but dont think the caddy does.
Honestly believe the air will be in the rears

The rear wheels have stayed pretty much central in the arches without the need for relocation plates. I’m happy with the ride quality too ImageImageImage

I decided not to attempt to do anything else with the brakes. I did however, see an advert for Halfords advertising brake fluid change for £39......it’s booked in for the morning.

@RY_VW. Mine was sitting very high, all ex BG vans do. It was dropped by 80mm on the rear and 40mm on the front. That gives me an arch gap of 50mm all round.

I dont know what your local kwick fit is like but I'd rather chance driving with no brakes than let them near mine! I'm sure you could of sorted it!

Swan’s caddy build

I’ve never had Halfords work on a vehicle of mine, so I’ll let you know tomorrow!
Just didn’t fancy doing it......I’ve considered it and decided against it. Confidence a bit shot at the moment!
