Caddy insurance in Ireland?
Just wondering what companies people here are using for their insurance in IE? I have gotten a few quotes to insure the van for private leisure use but all the companies seem picky on your "occupation". If you're a student for example or unemployed they won't go near you. Could affect me if my circumstances change in the future.
Also is there any way around having to tax the van privately instead of getting the cheaper commercial tax rate if you're not using the van commercially?

Re: Caddy insurance in Ireland?
Having recently gone through the ordeal that is getting insurance in Ireland I ended up with a commercial policy as a private policy on a commercial vehicle would not cover anything work related, which included driving to and from work. The commercial policy I have with Axa covers private and leisure use too. The only reason I have a van over a car is for carrying around my mountain bike so it doesn't get used in a work capacity.
Regarding the tax, I'm pretty sure you'll have to tax it commercially at the rate of 333 euro a year. This is what the person told me yesterday when I was vrting my Caddy. You just use your PPSN in place of a VAT number. I'll be going through the process in a few weeks once I can't get a DOE booked in.

Re: Caddy insurance in Ireland?
I only renewed mine last week, I’ve been with AXA via Sheridan insurance in Cavan town, I’m officially a farmer, this was the only way I could get insurance, I do have a herd number for the horses.
Having ran about for a day, Sheridan were still the best by far. I’m 42, no claims and a clean license and it was still just shy of €800 fully comp (UK guys this is cheap, my da is 65, with 10 years no claims and his is €490 on a 1.6 Octavia.)
As for the €333 commercial tax be careful especially if your stopping by a Garda in the know, they will lift it!
I was in the petrol in the airport and a Garda walked over with a big smile, checked the window and walked away, I asked what was up, he told me he was about to call a tow truck, mine is taxed private, for the extra €150 definitely worth the peace of mind.

Re: Caddy insurance in Ireland?
I went through this recently and i have mine insured private and taxed private. My insurance is 350 Euro for the year with Axa and the tax cost just over 700 euro for the year.
When I bought the van the previous owner had it tax as a commercial. I had to send in a form to the Motor Tax Office, its Form RF111 CHANGE OF PARTICULARS. This pretty much lets them know I want to change the class from commercial to private. You can also use this form to tax the van for the year.
I was thinking of going the commercial route but I dont have a VAT # and I intended to only use it for leisure and i wanted piece of mind also if anything did happen to go wrong.

Re: Caddy insurance in Ireland?
I cant believe there is such a difference in insurance costs, im fully comp also and paying 350.00. 800.00 is a lot, especially for someone from Cavan to fork outBoonalon wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 10:30 pm I only renewed mine last week, I’ve been with AXA via Sheridan insurance in Cavan town, I’m officially a farmer, this was the only way I could get insurance, I do have a herd number for the horses.

700 seems very expensive for tax. What model/CO2 rating is your van?FishermansFriend wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 10:04 am I went through this recently and i have mine insured private and taxed private. My insurance is 350 Euro for the year with Axa and the tax cost just over 700 euro for the year.

Ive a rating of 120 for the CO2 so if its taxed as a private car it should only be 200 euro for a year but no doubt Ireland have some backwards way of charging more.
If your van is classed as private, do you pay the cheaper rate for tolls?

Yea it was 710 euro to tax it private, i think its 330 to tax it as a commercial. I have a 171 2L TDI 75Bhp. No the tolls are the same cost as far a I know.Ferret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 12:14 pm 700 seems very expensive for tax. What model/CO2 rating is your van?

Re: Caddy insurance in Ireland?
I think you've been charged on the pre 2008 system based on the cc of the engine rather than the emissions going by the motor tax website.FishermansFriend wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 12:55 pm Yea it was 710 euro to tax it private, i think its 330 to tax it as a commercial. https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/41c9c ... tax-rates/
Comerical tax is 333 euro per year for goods vehicles up to 3000kg.
I've a 172 2L TDI 102bhp with ad blue which is essentially the same engine as yours and its rated at 120g/km for CO2 so it should be only 200 euro per year to tax privately.
Might be worth giving the tax office a call as they might owe you a refund if there has been a mistake!

Re: Caddy insurance in Ireland?
On the tax, anyone without a VAT number will have to tax the van private and it does revert back to the old tax rates of pre 2008 regardless of engine and emissions, I'm paying €710 for my 2.0 2016 caddy. Commercial tax is very hard to get now without a VAT number, some counties are abit more easy going but I know here in Kerry is very hard because I tried everything.
Got my van insure with AXA for around €700ish. It covers both work and leisure, breakdown, windows and covers me in Europe & UK, also have a trailer on that policy too all fully comp. I'm 30 with a full licence and max no claims bonus. The reason I'm with AXA and stay with them is because they will allow me to transfer my no claims from the Van back onto a car if I need, be carefull because alot of companies wont accept no claims from a Van on a private car policy.

@djohall same reasons here, the big plus side for me also was its with a small broker, no muppets in call centres

Re: Caddy insurance in Ireland?
I was a bit worried that both of you were paying €700ish and I was paying €350 so I called AXA to make sure I am covered right. I was under the impression I was insured private but after talking to them just now its a commercial policy but I can also use it for domestic and pleasure. They said it depends on your occupation if they can give you a policy or not. I'm a quantity surveyer so I am ok but they said if I worked in a regular office they couldn't have gave me the policy.

Re: Caddy insurance in Ireland?
Im 40, self employed in construction industry and was quoted €550 by insuremyvan.ie last year on a 2013 caddy with full licence, 5 years NCB.
I rang AA and told them im being quoted around 500 and could they beat it and they "mirrored" my no claims bonus so it stays with my private car (that was also insured by AA) and they got me commercial insurance for €480
