Modifying rear lights

Post by Papa Bear »

I believe rear lights are sonic welded together but has anyone actually opened them up to make any modifications to them?

I’ve thought about ways to cut and refit, also thought about ways to make a new lens.
Maybe I just have too much time on my hands :D

I've done modifications on the tracks so that a LHD left hand light can be used to give second reverse light, and the brake light doubles up as a fog light. The bulb carrier (and circuitry) comes apart from the lenses. Or did you mean separating the different colour lenses?

@stedlocks, seen them and they look good but too much for me. Plus want to do something totally different.
@anoneamus, I mean take the lens off, replace the innards, maybe even replace the lens. Will test my casting

I have attacked a set I had spare and yes they are sonic welded so no easy way to get them apart. I cut them using a combination of tools (mainly an ultrasonic knife) and the bit I was then concerned with was how you could accurately glue them back together as it’s not the neatest of cuts. One lens came off quite well, the other one shattered.

Thought is to build a jig before cutting open. If I can get a lens off and cast a new lens, I can break the lens off the next one to refit new lens.
