Mk4 ex BG build thread

Post by Sands0777 »

Hi all, after buying an ex BG van and it arriving this week I thought I’d start a build thread so I can keep a record of it progress.
Managed to buy a Seat engine cover off gumtree for £10 removed seat badge to reveal Vw badge and cleaned up, didn’t have front cover mounts on the engine but ordered some and waiting for them to arrive.

Also bought some roof rails and bars and fitted them. Noticed some ghosting from the British Gas sign writing so cleaned, clay bar, cutting compound with DA, polished and waxed. Has removed the ghosting and looks much better. Looks like the roof had never seen any shampoo since new! Also gave the engine bay a quick clean over and removed the BG racking.
I would be interested if anyone has repurposed the racking for furniture in the rear?

Also picked up some alloys 17” second hand needed a Powdercoat so have taken them to be done should be back next week.
Sound deadening, thermal insulation sheet and recycled plastic bottle insulation ordered along with carpet. Rear bulkhead removed but may re fit as I’m not 100% how I want to use the rear.
I have ordered a auto headlight switch and sensor and wind deflectors. Also ordered some lt5b touch up paint to touch up some stone chips around it. (Found the paint code on the fuse box under the headlight switch thanks to the forum)
I have found this site excellent so far for inspiration even with limited access.
I will try and keep a photo record of the progress.

Hi

Looks like your off to a flying start with your van!

I also have a ex bg caddy maxi but is used for work.

Had it almost a year now and hasn’t missed a beat and it does get some hammer, you have made a good choice!

I was wondering if you would share with me the part nos for your engine cover and the headlight auto switch and sensor.

Those are things that would make life a little more comfortable for me.

Thanks

The auto light switch was eBay link here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174400815361 will update when it arrives if it works ok.

Part no for the engine cover is 03L 103 925 R
I think I just got lucky and for a tenner it was worth it. I’m sure I seen it on this forum that they all have a VW logo under the seat badges etc.

I have noticed that if I leave my lights on and turn off the ignition the side lights do not stay illuminated so could just leave them on all the time.

Fitted dodomat sound deadening to rear panels and roof today. Does make quite a difference to the sound when closing the doors or knocking the panels from outside. Used 1 roll. Will order another to fit to the driver and passenger doors and foot wells.

I did offer £5 at first but they turned it down. If you don’t ask you don’t get. :D The list is growing by the day.

Fitted the auto headlight switch earlier. Very easy to do just pulled the side cover off next to the light switch and pulled the switch panel forward to release the clips holding the switch in.
I did have to remove some trim to located the sensor and wire in the front triangle window. All seems to work ok when covering the sensor.
Fitted some Osram white bulbs (much better than the standard bulbs) was looking to order led sidelights but it does look like hit and miss for errors etc. so will look to get some legal white bulbs.
Carpet arrived for the rear and insulation so will start on that whe. I get some time.

Hi buddy
I had my Ex BG caddy for some time now.
It looks like you’re off to a flying start with this build.
I don’t think I started this fast.
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing more progress.

Do love an EX BG caddy

Hi Sean, thanks. I have stalled a bit due to the history issue and possible return or I may have done some more to it.
I did just comment on your build thread. Your van was one of the ones that stood out to me when I first joined. That’s a nice looking van.

Picked up my wheels from Powdercoating today. I’m happy with them. I literally picked them up from the seller last week and dropped them to the powdercoater. They commented that they were straight and really good condition so happy with that.

Also started installing the insulation on top of the sound deadening today. The rear is nearly finished with the insulation.
Will start looking at getting the wiring in and locating the leisure battery before carpeting the rear. I’ve also got some vapour barrier and adhesive strips the to attach it after all the wiring is in place for electrics.

Picked up some 5mm ply and cut out and started to carpet the panels. I removed the original panels in place and used them as templates and used clear pvc for the sliding door windows and rear window blanks. I stuck the pvc on using some tack spray and marked around the windows and transferred it onto the ply board.
I now have a full set of templates to use to make more if needed.
I marked the carpet to ensure the direction of the pile is the same. Now the panels are made I will make a decision if I want to carpet the metal frame.
The carpet is anthracite and I ordered dark grey clips but they seem too light for the carpet so i have ordered black clips.
I didn’t want to use hidden clips as I’d rather be able to see where they are if I need to remove panels.
