What would you buy and why?

Post by balmay »

Hi all,

I've been a bit unlucky with my last purchase, so I thought I would ask for some opinion as I can't make my mind.

I'm looking to buy a new used van for my business, as I can not go any longer without it, I've been looking for a while and found 2 vehicles which I would consider, but can't make my mind what would be a better option, hence my questions.

Due to the nature of my business, the van needs to be maxi version and will be carrying on a daily basis around 200kg.

1. 2010 VOLKSWAGEN CADDY MAXI LIFE TDI (104), 1896CC Diesel, 5DR, Automatic

2. 2013 VOLKSWAGEN CADDY MAXI LIFE TDI (102), 1598CC Diesel, 5DR, Manual

Both cars have an FSH, and I have never driven an automatic car but don't believe it will be too hard to convert.

so what would you buy and why?

Out of those choices I would leave the 1.6 because of injector issues.

I’m a bit confused here mate. The first van youve referenced suggests it has the 1.9 TDI engine in (1896cc) Yet by 2013, that engine had been discontinued for a few years and replaced with the 2.0 TDI (1968cc)

If it were me, I’d pick the 2.0 over the 1.6, but I’d pick the 1.6 over the 1.9. My opinion only of course.

@swan, apologize, my mistake Automatic is 2010, I've corrected the original post.

Can I ask why would you choose 1.6 over 1.9?

Ahh, that’s makes sense now

1.9s can occasionally suffer from big end failure which is gonna be an expensive one to fix. As the van is 11 years old, I’d want to know how hard it has been driven and the quality of the oils used in that time.

With the 1.6, the main thing is occasional injector failure, a cheaper fix than the big end.

However, if you’re happy the 1.9 has been well looked after, and the engine doesn’t sound knocky at all, there’s no reason why it won’t give you trouble free miles.

Many lads have owned both vans with no issues.

Just my 2p mate.

If it was my choice, I would have got the one with the 2.0TDI.

Hi, personally I would avoid the auto.

Don't get me wrong, when they work they drive amazing, however when, not if they go wrong, it's big money

Thank you all for the advice, much appreciated.

In regards to 2.0 engine which one would you recommend?
IS 2.0 SDI with 70 BHP would be enough or would remap help or should I search for a more powerful 140 bhp which is really hard to find. Throughout the reading of the forum found a lot of people recommending BMM engines, but how can I check apart from looking into the v5 and stamps which car has that engine.

I apologize for the dumb questions, trying to avoid mistakes, maybe it's just me, but find it quite difficult to deal with some sellers as soon as they realize I'm a female.
This forum has been such a help throughout the process and learned a lot from you guys so hope I can bother you for a bit.

Any help much appreciated and thank you in advance.

If I can also ask where is the best place to buy genuine VCDS cable in UK?

The 2.0 SDI isn’t really an engine you can do anything with to get more power. It has no turbo you can upgrade or anything like that. All you can do is maintain it.

The 2.0 TDI is another matter. Most I believe come in the 102 bhp state of tune, but you can easily remap it to 140 bhp, or even 180 ish if you fancy a lively drive

The TDI was introduced into the caddy with the facelift that came in 2010/11.

As for the engine codes, I’m not familiar with those, but someone on here will be able to advise further.

Don’t worry about the questions, it’s the whole point of the forum

Hi All,

Thank you very much for your advice, after failing a couple of times to secure 2.0 TDI I have now secured the beautiful 2010 facelift model with 1.6 engine, and it's an ex-British Gas Caddy Maxi, which I'm delighted with. It has just one thing that I need to fix - the passenger mirror - as don't see properly.
It's now booked for a timing belt change and full service, and I can wait to start modifying it a bit.

One more time big thank you all for your patience.
