Caddy mk4 boot lid handle actuator with camera* frozen

Post by Marin97 »

With this cold wather in my country there was a bit of rain during day. Temps below 0 so freezing. In the next morning I tried to open boot (big single door version) with no success, as it seems water is inside that little handle and I couldn't press a micro switch.
PN is: 2k5827566c
So I went to dealer as I have warranty and said what happend. They said it is okay and they can't find problem.
Anyone had this? Where could water come from? I'm thinking third stop light, or near part itself? Number plate lights?

Unfortunately there will be, I think, no more freezing temps so I can't prove it froze.

Help any ideas welcome!

And I think it will froze again next winter, but out of warranty then.

Are you sure it's the button? When my 06 used to do it the rubbers were at fault, a bit of vaselene on them and it didn't happen again.

Sorry, didn't understand that, where to put vaseline, on outside of handle or inside?
The ting is that I couldn't get handle to do click, i couldn't get lock to activate and open.

I had a similar issue a few weeks back with the handle moving but not engaging with the lock. I had to pull the handle down a little until I heard a click and then it worked for a while.

I removed the interior panel and lubricated all the pivot points from the handle to the lock a little spray silicon grease/oil and now everything works perfectly.

Vaselene on the rubbers, as I said its often the actual rubbers sticking and not the lock and although the locks do stick sonetimes I've never heard of the micro switch on the back not being able to be pressed in.
I was just questioning if it was the actual lock not working or if it was the door not opening.

Thanks all for answers, i think there was water in handle and it froze and it created a barier between rubber and inside plate and between plate and micro switch...
Thats my opinion. I'll get back with results..

OK, I see. I thought it was a sealed unit. Keep us posted.

I have had that on the Caddy and on my other car a Peugeot 2008. Just some rain water into the handle from outside, it freezes, and the handle mechanism will not work unless you give it a hard pull. There are two products I use at the start of winter, both available on Amazon. Holts or similar silicone spray into the handle mechanism, and hinges if they are exposed. Don't use products that are not pure silicone as they have things like graphite added, which can make a mess. Then Sonax GummiPfleger on the rubbers which get tacky and stick in the cold weather. Don't use vaseline type of products as they are not made for rubber and apart from being messy can have long term detrimental effecxcellent product s made for the job, and worth what they cost

Okay cool! But my main concern is where water is coming from?

Most likely to be water ingress around the high level/third brake that is pooling down in the cavity or seeping in around the door handle. It would be worthwhile removing the interior cover and having a look to see if you can spot any telltale signs of water/rust, etc...
