Looking at buying a caddy

Hi

In a nut shell I am looking at buying a caddy but getting really confused over them all.

I am eyeing up a 2.0 after lots of research and feeling this is the best option. However it is 75PS. How does this differ from the 1.6 75?

This 2.0 shows up as a maxi with insurers but it is just the normal size - also puzzled!!

the 2.0 post 2015 caddy is a good engine and is less likely to have any injector issues, which some of the 1.6 litre engines did.
Also the 2.0 is 'detuned' meaning an inexpensive remap will turn the 2.0 from 75 up to 150, very easily as the factory 150hp is the same engine.

As for it showing as a maxi, you need to investigate and get a car report. Might be an error, or it may mean the van you are looking at has a dodgy past/ false plates, crashed repaired etc... so would involve matching plates, vin numbers and the V5, then do a car vertical or an HPI..

I’ll likely leave this particular one alone or look into it further!

The 75ps will likely be lower spec, smaller shocks, brakes and possibly lower trim levels.
A 2.0 102ps is what you're really after with a highline being top of the range but just find one that you like.
I would also leave this one alone for reasons above.

Ah Scooby makes an excellent point regadring the shocks. the lower end model, some have a smaller diameter shock and hub assembly. This limits options for brake upgrades I believe. So yea, the 102 (what I bought) with a higher spec is a good call.

I got a 2016 102 Startline (low spec) but it was an ex Sky van so has some nice factory upgrades including the top spec entertainment pack. So it has a very good hands free set up, blutooth callig, parking sensors etc. But it lacks steering wheel controls, body coloured trim, heated seats and all that good stuff. I was able to upgrade to carpets, new nice seats and sound deadened the cab, quite cheaply and easily, but upgrading the steering wheel and other stuff is a bit more money, time and expertise. So if you absolutely must have this stuff, the cheapest easiest route will be to find one with the spec you want. (unless you are very handy and good at sourcing second hand parts). This forum is great so search peoples build threads for info and inspiration

So I get the impression it may not be worth while remapping 75s? It’s mostly them I am seeing in the 2.0 so making it difficult.

Strangely on some insurance sites it does display the correct details so perhaps a database issue??

If you want a bit more power from the 2.0tdi, some remaps open them up to 190hp with about 480nm of torque.
Similar power from the stock golf gtd's as vw must of restricted these engines possibly for company fleet purposes.

It's just differential pricing to maximise profits. It's an economic decision. Make one SKU capable of reliably producing the power of your 'top model'. Have one production line, one parts list, one configuration. Then, have different software options to fulfil different performance levels. Then you can charge different prices, and maximise profit at a given 'willingness to pay' pricepoint for the consumer.
Every company does this, and it's just about profits. Benefit to us, is that by remapping, the hardware is already fully capable of producing more power, reliably 👍..

I wouldn't rule out a 75, the one thing I would do is make sure it has aircon. Lots of the 75s when I was looking didn't even spec AC. It is a must have imo. All the other stuff, even the bigger shocks/hubs and brakes, can be upgraded if you want a DIY project, and in terms of engine power you can remap to get the same out of a 75 as you can from a 102.

The advice is just about what you are looking for. If you want to invest time, diy and a bit of money and slowly build it into your perfect van, then even a 75 will be an okay option.
If you want something ready to go with all the features you want, and are only really consider a remap on your mods list, then starting out with a higher spec may be a better option.

The potential is there in all these caddys, it's just about your plans and what you have in mind.

So torn. So just to clarify, remapping a 75 2.0 may not be worth the hassle due to brakes etc - what would my limit be on the remap would you say if you had to guess before other parts would need upgrading?

My 75 2L TDI 2017 has 55mm hubs which are the hubs you need if you would like to modify your brakes. It's remapped to 150 now.

I fell into the trap of a non aircon van and it wasn’t pleasant in the summer 🙈 I honestly didn’t think about it. It’s a 2018 van and the 2011 I was replacing had aircon so I kind of expected it to have aircon. Rookie mistake form not really a rookie.

I think there are 'factory' versions of the exact same 2.0 engine running 180bhp as standard in other VAG marks. So technically you should have no issues having a remap to around this power even from the 75hp version.
Definitely worth reading through other peoples experiences as not all remaps, remapping companies and individuals are of the same standard.
I've been looking for someone local to me, and so far haven't found anyone I would trust. DubUnit gets amazing reviews but they are wayy to far from me.

My advise, be patient, read, plan and don't get rushed into buying a van you aren't sure about... if there is any doubt, there is no doubt. Plenty of second hand Caddys about.
