Possible to rollback ECU to pre-Dieselgate fix?

Post by Queestce »

G'day All,

My new (to me) 2013 Maxi TDI250 1.6 has previously had the infamous recall done by VW in line with the Dieselgate stopgap... Obviously I don't know how it drove before that but from what I've read it did nothing to help fuel efficiency or power/Tq. I have flashed ECU's before on motorbikes and wondered if perhaps anyone on here knew if it was possible (with the right connector) to flash my ECU back to a pre-Dieselgate version? I know I could get a re-map/tune but that's a very expensive option and this ain't no racecar! If it was accessible perhaps I could even remove the ECU and send it somewhere for a rollback reflash?...

Any insight would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Tom

I’m sure it wasn’t just the ECU they changed. Didn’t some models also have exhaust systems as well as other items swapped. I’m sure someone with more knowledge than me on this will clarify.

Speak to your local tuner. I considered a roll back and spoke to one that had a way to do it. A normal remap would not reverse the changes.

Hmm, does anyone know what exactly was changed on a 1.6 during the fix? Looking further it seems they must have fitted a "flow transformer" which looks simple enough to remove. I wonder if just removing this and adding some straight tubing in its place would reverse some of the negatives?... Perhaps I will just live with it, but I'd love to improve fuel efficiency wherever possible.

I thought the fix was just a remap that made the egr / dpf work double time? I need to get mine done

Go on Facebook, there is an vw emissions group who will tell you which tuner in your area will perform the roll back, they only do it by you contacting them direct as vw are looking for the runners to shut them down, the 1.6tdi has a trumpet type thing inserted into the air box and some fuel rail dampers fitted ImageImage

VW call it a "flow straightener", and say it shapes the flow that hits the MAF sensor, but essentially I think it just restricts flow... It's part of the fix they apply to 1.6 TDI engines. It's very easy to remove.

I mounted a airflow straightener in my 1,6 tdi that doesn't have the dieselfix update and after couple of km i got the check engine light lit.
I reset the warning with vcds and tried again and the light came up again i dont remember what vcds said but the airflow straightener does something.
It's supposed to take away the air swirls so the the sensor measure more accurate.
I have seen this type of grid in many other cars to as an original part, not just uppdated Vw's.

So the air flow straightener does affect the fuel consumption?
Any feedback on this?

Idk if you have enough knowledge and own a ODIS diagnostic tool

with odis you can flash your ecu with a original flash file

There’s a good few YouTube videos that cover this very issue regarding the air straightener and how to fix it.

Did you ever manage to figure out how to do the roll back?

Not sure if my caddy has had it done but my caddy keeps regen’ing every 30miles and I’m wondering if it’s related
