DSG caddy ?

Post by Fdignan »

I'm looking a buying a maxi at the moment but I want a 2.0 and 6 speed. I have a 1.6 currently and want to change for comfort on long journeys and extra space.
I have found one with an auto box, I assume it's DSG. What are they like to drive and is the gearbox ect reliable?
Thanks

I figured they must be ok as they are becoming more common .Is there much extra involved in servicing? I've read they need oil changed ect.

Transmission fluid needs changing every 60,000km otherwise much the same as manual, servicing wise

I have a 96k miles 2019 Caddy Maxi 1.4 Tsi with 7 speed gearbox. Fantastic car to drive, no problems with the gearbox. Shifts perfectly and drives smooth. Automatic gives much more comfort when city driving, and i like it more on steep hilly switchback roads.

Firstly check the service history as the DSG box requires Oil changes at certain distances.
I’ve had numerous VW/Audi DSG vehicles over the last 20+ years and never had an Issue.
On the test drive, put it in the S (sport mode) and make sure changes up and down are smooth, then put it in manual (move stick to left) and manually change gears up & down….. checking for smooth instant changes👍👍👍

I have a 2018 1.4tsi caddy with the 7 speed dsg. VW say it is a wet box and does not need serviced. Is that correct? I’m sure there is a filter on the front of the box, and I would think it would need replaced at intervals…. But VW say it doesn’t.
Can someone here 100% confirm please??

1.4 tsi with 7 speed is DQ200 dry clutch. Sealed for life, no servicing needed.

@allanwarnock

Most manufacturers say their auto boxes are sealed for life but I don’t think it’s good practice to not change the oil. Oil wears out with heating and cooling cycles and doesn’t last forever.
In my wife’s Mercedes, it’s a job that requires diagnostics to do as you can only drain the oil when it’s at a certain temperature. I’m not sure how it works on our Caddy’s, but if you’re thinking about doing it yourself, might be an idea to get advice first.
I’ve always had the oil changed every 60k miles on any automatic car I’ve owned.

@ Fidignan.

The Dq200 dry box does seem quite problematic, the dq250 wet boxes are better.
