1 of 1 day van design…?

Post by Singletracksheffield »

Sharing my (nearly) end result of this small budget build. What I’ve tried to achieve is a 5 seater family vehicle that can be used to support us camping with power, and also as a race weekend van for solo camping. I’ve gone a little off piste to maximise space and function. Other than seats and windows which were completed by caddy solutions, this was all a DIY project.

2017 maxi 2.0
Rear seat 1x1x1 touran install
Rear side window install
Sound deadening 60 sheets DEADN
insulation dodo thermo liner 10m (used about 7)
B&q plastic bottle insulation
Dodo pro duo under floor, 12mm structural ply (self tapped down) + altro
10m2 anthracite carpet and 2m2 smoke grey for ceiling
Victron 30a isolated DC to DC charger on custom mount under passenger seat
Eco-worthy 100ah Bluetooth battery build into a raised wood shelf on RHS, boxed in with structural ply (fixed to walls only with self tapping not floor or tubs)
Shallow shelf unit in other side
Clear cut camper table 400x400mm
Rear side window blanks screwed into angled glued chocks (was a challenge to get that chock angle right!)
6x9 boxed in over the sloping wheel arch area to maximise space.
6x acegoo warm 3000k down light with touch dimmer, Switch panel
Apple car play screen + reversing camera
Custom bike wheel mount that clips into the seat rail
Outside: vanstyle spoiler lip, sliding door covers, body coloured mouldings, awning rail plastic from UK Leisure Parts.
Polished exterior to remove a few scratches, black paint struggled with holograms but the farecla G360 + gmop removed 90% of it

Outstanding:
Window blinds in rear
front speaker drill out and replace with Vibe

Cost to date rough figures:
Seats and windows £1350
Battery system, shoutout to Wired Campers, best price on Victron dc charger kit. In total the system was about £550
Batteries and solar were cheapest for deadening + isolation total cost £300
Altro floor was an off cut about £12
Ply was about £75, floor ply offered in kind thanks Van Protection Services south yorks
Body colouring done by a mate in the trade for free
Sliding rail covers tps about £130
Boot lip £58
Awning rail and awning £130
Speakers £100
Carplay £60
Total about £2800

Great build up! Hoping for a similar result.

I'm about to vibration and sound deaden my 2017 Maxi 2.0 and struggling with how much Silent Coat to use. I see lots of people covering the entire floor and much of the walls, but some reason that the point of diminishing returns is well beyond that.

I've read that since the floor is perforated already the gain of covering it with sound deadening won't yield much results unless your building a competition level audio van.

Looks like you've only covered areas of single sheet metal and left the framing free from deadening and only insulated the flooring. What is the noise level of the car like? Do you have any tips or tricks regarding the level of deadening?

I covered as much of the outer skin as possible, the internal contoured surfaces do not suffer as much from panel boom, and if you intend to carpet the inside, it would not be the best look to cover everything in sound deadening before. In general the van is ok on noise, there’s a bit of a rumble low in the gears but nothing excessive.

I used dodo duo pro on the floor, so that’s separate to the sheets of the deadn I used on walls and roof. I think most recommend sound deadening the floor, it also acts as a tacky/spongy layer between the metal and ply to stop it vibrating. I used every last bit of the amount I purchased, but I was very thorough going up into the nooks and crannies, I think I used more than most. I’ve just purchased a little extra to do the front door skins when I upgrade the speakers.

Hope that helps

Cheers bud, the van followed on from the biking passion. Soend a few nights in the van with the bike, it gets thrown into the front then on a slant tucked behind the speaker pod

Couple of updates

Little switch wired into the Victron dc to dc charger so I can avoid constant trickling of lifepo4 to 100%. Thinkin for long periods without leisure use I can deactivate constant charging. Purchased from Ali express

I just found this on AliExpress: Waterproof IP20 12V 10A Rocker Switch With Line Line Length 0.5/1/2M Adhesive Switch

The VW badge is a very affordable solution compared sanding, priming, masking, painting etc etc
How's the fit front AND rear ??
I wonder if there is a way to install cameras into the badge

Front is perfect. Rear not fit yet, but it’s adhesive so I imagine no issues.
