Garage replaced injector with 03L130277B

Post by raf »

Hey everyone, this is my first post here.

I've had an injector go on my 1.6 tdi but was covered by AA parts and garage, which covers £500. So I paid £35 excess to AA and £252 to the garage, so the total bill was somewhere around £750 I guess (my invoice only had labour costs). The van was at the garage for 4 days.

Anyway I got the van back from the garage and was disapointed to see that they had fit a part with the number 03L130277B that looks like it could be refurbished. I was hoping to see part number A2C9626040080, which I've read is the upgraded version - you can get them for £350 from PF Jones. I phoned them up and they said they were unaware of the known fault with the part number and reassured me that I have a year guarentee on it. Looking up part 03L130277B to buy online, I cannot find any that are 'new' (because they haven't been made for years) nor can I see any that are over £200, so I'm at a loss how the garage got the AA to give them £500 for it.

So basically I'm worried whether it's 1. part with known fault 2. If it's second hand

So does this seem weird to anyone else that a good garage (good reviews and vouched for) wouldn't know about this? Or am I overthinking this whole thing

You could check with your local VW dealer to see if they are still sold new. If not you could query it with the garage and ask them for a copy of their invoice for the injector.

Garages have a right to make a mark up, but 250% on a part, even if the AA are footing the bill is wrong. I suspect the AA won't care though.

It might be that you had a contract with the garage not the AA and they only insured you for your loses (cost of parts, less excess) in which case maybe trading standards could intervene if you can prove they overcharged for a refurbished part.

Ultimately you have to ask how much you want to work for a couple of hundred though.

A few phone calls and emails, a couple of hours of your time, yes. Getting bogged down by the rights or wrongs for weeks without the chance of winning, no.

There is a date letter encoded into the top of the injectors which shows when it was made. Mine for example are all 2015 when I checked them, and I found the list online somewhere (could have been here)

They started the date code stamps from 2000 or 2001 so you could check the date stamp (four digit code, starting with O or P for 2015/2016). So PA24 is 24th of Jan 2016 for example, A,B being 2000/2001 - the second letter is the month I think. P = 2016, A=Jan and 24 for 24th.

Mine are all OA22 so 22nd Jan 2015 which ties in exactly with the manufacturing date of the van from the VIN.

By the way mine are the same part number and from what I've read, are the revised units with low to zero failure rate.

The B or S at the end does not signify Bosch or Siemens, they are all Siemens units on the 1.6 as it has a Siemens Simos ECU. Bosch was never an option despite a myth online about this. But the B was a revised version over the S ones.

@STP

Right, if mine is KF10 then it's one from 2010, well before they were revised. So I've spent a lot of time any money for a dodgy injector. Oh well I've paid for it now, might as well use it. I wish the garage put in a good one but what can you do. Thank you both for your replies.

The Ford TDCi also uses Siemens injectors which didn't suffer the same issues across the same year range (very early ones on the MK1 focus did, but not from the MK2 onwards) so they can be fitted but you need a way to convert the injector coding values from the Ford code across to the VAG numbers for coding them in, and they are cheaper. They run a bit rough if used without coding but they do run.
