Humming noise coming from front right

Post by MtNDiViSIoN »

Hi,

Ive got a humming noise coming from my front right during low speed turns. The humming goes away when i dip my clutch. Any ideas or anyone had this? Im thinking it could be my wheel bearing but anything over 20 mph and it doesnt make the sound. Plus it would get worse with speed if it was my bearing.

If the noise disappears when the clutch is depressed when turning, but comes back when it you re-engage while still turning, then possibly it is the diff bearings.

Common problem. Mine does it too.
VW issued a technical bulletin that recommended a particular gear box oil to replace the existing one.
I paid a garage to change the oil, (though now suspect it was not that specific one)
Went away for a while then came back.
So possibly the viscosity of the oil is the issue.

There are other theories such as gearbox bearings, bushings and the thrust bearing on the clutch but from what I have read they would probably be accompanied with other symptoms.

If you find the bulletin then it's worth a shot. Though I would at least buy the oil from VW if you are going to get a garage to change the oil for you.

I've decided to live with it for the time being.

Hello colleagues. I also had a similar noise from the hydraulic power steering (the steering is electric on mine and nothing hydraulic) when turning on the left side, I changed the oil in the gearbox and the noise (the hum) disappeared. It was a gearbox oil with something based on ceramics. (I don't think I'm allowed to promote products)

I have the same issue, a rumbling or plasticky vibration/ increased engine noise from the left side, when turning right and on the throttle a bit at low speed. It's like the engine noise appears to emanate from the left front area but if I lift off the throttle while turning, the noise disappears unless I press the throttle again so seems less clutch related but more to do with torque being applied when turning.

It's also a lot less noticeable in very cold weather, so could well be gearbox oil / diff noise due to thickening in the cold temps. It's very prominent in summer temps.

If the tsb was to fit thicker oil then that would make sense, I'll have a look for that bulletin myself as I'd like to resolve it too. Does the diff share the gearbox oil?
