Wondering if anyone can help me looking at some new wheels. I've got a completely stock 2012 1.6 TDI Bluemotion which is currently sporting steelies that I'd like to change to some alloys. Looking at 18's at the moment but I was wondering what the max wheel width/offset combo is that I could go on the stock suspension. Found some nice looking 18x8" with an offset of 35, would these be okay? Cheers

Hi,
You shouldn’t have any issues with that size and width but you want to be at 45 offset for a flush fitment I believe.
So with a 35 offset you’ll poke a bit?
I’m running 19x8.5” all round with a 40 offset and have no issues at all with sliding door passing etc.

Ideal width is 8 to 8.5j, 9j at a push depending on offset and as close to ET45 as possible

The ET will depend on the width
An ET45 8j will sit completely different to a ET45 9j
You have to allow for the width of the rim too
A 9j rim is an inch wider than a 8j so that’s roughly 12mm front and 12mm rear of the rim
Ideal flush fit is 8.5j with ET45
So for instance if you had a 8j rim and wanted the same flush fit you’d want ET39
If you had a 9j rim, to get the same you’d want a et51
Etc etc

Cheers everyone. I'll keep an eye out for some with a higher offset then. I've seen a lot of people running Golf and Passat wheels, I presume the weight rating is fine on these, I can't find any official stats for them

A 8j ET35 would sit 3.4mm further out than the idea 8.5j ET45

What's considered too much of a poke? I'd ideally like to keep it looking fairly OEM, and obviously be able to open the door, though I've seen people on here saying that a 18x8.5J ET42 is fine, and 18x8J ET35 is only an extra 1mm further out

Not an expert in this ET business at all and thanks Lea for that interesting insight via that diagram.

Practically and in my experience of fitting various wheels on the caddy you cant go wrong with an 8.5j x ET45 in my humble opinion

If people are running 8.5j et42 with no issues then correct, 8j ET35 should be ok too
But remember if your lowered then tyre profile / width also plays a part

Thanks everyone! Looks like I'll most likely end up with some used Golf wheels providing the load rating is okay, there's a few nice looking sets on eBay which all seem to be 18x7.5J ET49, even some with high enough rated tyres

If it helps I’ve previously ran 8.5x19 with an ET42 offset, I had no issues at all with rubbing or the side door.

This is the summary

J-size is the width of the rim, so 8,5J is wider than 7,5J.
For ET: the lower the ET, the more your wheels stick out.
So anything below 8,5J + anything higher than ET45 will not stick out.

There's only a few mil difference between 8.5J ET45 and the 8j ET35 so I'm guessing they'll be okay, I'll see what I can get my hands on for a reasonable price though
