Ben’s Kombi MTB Camper build

Post by BWH888 »

Hi guys, I’m From Dorset, just got this 2012 Kombi to make my own. High miles but great low price.

Apart from the intermittent engine fuel pressure low fault (covered in another post under engines).. the rear anti roll bar bushes were shot, NSF lower control arm bushes gone and washer pipe broken by the bonnet hinge. Probably all common Caddy stuff!??

It had a big ladder rack on top cut to suit a roof tent, so that had to go in exchange for roof bars

The standard radio needed the code, which I bought, and still didn’t work.. got my money back, they said I’d have to get it plugged in at VW.. probably £££! So I got a nice RNS315 DAB, Bluetooth, NAV unit, fitted it today and to my surprise already had the DAB aerial, so just needed to route the gps antenna to the bottom centre of the screen and Bluetooth microphone to the interior light.

Anyone want the old one? Is it an easy decode?

A productive day today, put the radio in, roof bars, did the lower arm and rear anti roll bar bushes and changed the fuel filter..

Next up is to collect these Mk6 leather seats on Caddy bases tomorrow or Saturday
Image

Then next week install the Silentcoat and dodo thermal wrap I ordered this morning.. man that stuff is expensive! Still.. I needs to be much quieter, I’m used to my Volvo V70!
I’ve got a week off next week so expect some updates..
here’s the old girl

I know.. it really needs 18” and lowering! Excuse the tiny 15” standard alloys!

Thanks guys, it is a great colour isn’t it.. pure grey I believe.

Started the sound deadening this afternoon, 4mm silent coat to the arches and floor so far. 29 sheets if anyone needs to know. A maxi panel van would likely need another 6 or so being a longer floor without the seats. (I think!?)

More on this tomorrow, and pick up the leather seats. Plenty to do over the next week.

A bit more done this morning, Silentcoat in behind the panels, rear tailgate and one of the sliding doors so far, stuffed every bit I could get to with Dodo thermal Fleece. The tailgate and sliding door sound much more solid on closing, real night/day difference!

Been a bit slow as trying to sort my engine issue.. it’s booked into the local vw specialist Thursday so on with some more mods until then..

Seats are in, I need to wire the lumber power supply into the fuse box, not sure if they’re heated too? There’s a lot of wires.. anyone know what colour does what? I know the yellow block is airbag.. what’s the others??

More Silentcoat to the roof, stuffed the double skin with Dodo fleece and lined with Dodo thermal over the Silentcoat.

Updated the Nav software on the RNS315 to V12. This took a full 2 hours to upload!

Started today with putting together a pair of stalks with CCS and MFD controls (to break up the monotony of deadening/insulating!!).

Coded in vcds and all working as they should.

Next up tackling the drivers door. At first glance I thought, why on earth did vw have this stupid bolt on inner skin with everything mounted to it!?!, but actually it comes out and in pretty easily and gives great access for deadening and insulating.

Image

This came out without too much bother once you’ve got your head around it.
Image

4mm Silentcoat deadening

Image

6mm Dodo thermal liner

Image

2mm Silentcoat to the inner panel. What an awkward shape to cover!

Image

And a bit of 2mm to the back of the inner door card.

Image

The door makes a satisfying clunk now, just need to get the lower hinge changed as there’s a little bit of drop in it.

A small but worthwhile upgrade.. Led DRL from “we sell HIDs”

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283324956717 ... media=COPY

They don’t throw up a bulb warning and no flicker.

Started on the carpeting too. One side done in anthracite from Mega Van Mats.. first time doing this and pretty happy with the result. Just waiting on some more insulation for the cavities on the other side before carpeting.

All holes covered with aluminium tape

Electrics panel and side door panel done. These hidden clips from MegaVanMats simply twist in from the rear so you don’t have to fit them until the face is carpeted.

Plans to recover the second row in black leather to match the fronts at some point.

Added some more dodo fleece to the roof and carpeted the liner. I’ll add some led lights when more funds allow.. the hardest part of all this is deciding what to prioritise spending on!
