Evening lads, weird one....
Coming home tonight on M25, get a red coolant light pop up saying check coolant level, temp gauge nearing the red. Immediately pulled over, switched off, looked under bonnet, coolant level fine.
Let it cool to 90 for 5 mins then it's been fine for the remaining 20 miles home, both on motorway and in traffic?
Nothing stuck to grill or blocking anything I can see
Any ideas?

It could be that your thermostat has stuck temporarily in the closed position mate. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

Yea I had thought that, slightly worried now tho, not the weather for it!!!

maybe have a look, see if you can tell if your auxiliary radiator fans are cutting in. if they arent, and you are running aircon etc. with current temps that might be enough for temps to creep up.. especially if van starts to do a regen too

Right, just taken her for a 30 mile boot up and down the dual carriageway, as soon as I joined and put my foot down, temps creeped up, straight away backed off and got behind a lorry, within 30 secs it's cooled back to 90.
Then remaining 25 miles, some at silly speeds (all in the name of science you understand) it's been absolutely fine.
I'm guessing the beginning of a thermostat fault as swan mentioned?
The fan is on for a while with engine off, is that a sign of a regen?
And Aircon was on both times
Made me feel slightly better as I should be able to at least make it to work for a few days.
Will call garage tommorow see what they say.

Has the timing belt and water pump been done recently?
This can be a sign of a failing water pump especially on the new active type with the diverter built in.

Hi doc, no not yet ,she's on 67k currently, waiting on some new droplinks from BC so was going to get a price from garage for this aswel.
Funny enough I did think this to myself the other day I need to get belt and water pump done. Weird.
Could a water pump be intermittent like this?

If it's the new type, they do go intermittently before outright failure.

Sounds like your water pump, that’s the exact symptoms mine had, 17 plate with 90k on when it went

Garage are adamant water pump wouldn't be intermittent, booked in for Monday for inspection.
Sods law, it ran like a dream all day ffs

Also, the gauge stays at 90C over a MASSIVE temp range (like 75C up to 110 or 115C), so the temperature can be all over the place without the gauge moving off 90C. When it goes past 90C on the gauge, the engine is already very hot!

Just came across this post, as I was looking into the exact same fault with mine, first acceleration it goes up, comes back down and settles. diagnostics have said it’s a temperature sensor however I’ve also been advised to get the pump and cam belt change, as it’s a 67 plate but only 42k on the clock. 9k of that in the last 3 months however due to work travelling.

The fact someone on here has advised the same pump issues gives me more confidence that’s the issue.

I’ve got a 15 plate with only 35k on the clock, water pump has started leaking, it’s in now for a new pump and timing belt.
