OEM steels will be subject to surface rusting as the paint is very thin. if you paint them this problem goes away. non OEM 'style oriented' steels from other manufacturers are often powder coated so less of an issue.

£300 for a full set, if with new branded tyres of VW OEM 16s is a good price

Good to know, thanks. I've picked up a set of brand new OEM steels with tyres. I could quite easily give them a couple of coats of paint before I get them put on the van to protect them a bit!

Thanks for the tip. Was hoping if the steels I acquire are new and the paint's in good nick then a couple of coats of hammerite would do the trick. Or do you think it has to be powder coating with everything stripped back first and then all the added expense?

I'm planning on some masking tape and Halfords spray paint! Any paint is better than none right? There's quite a few videos on YouTube that cover this sort of approach

I used the playing card trick (deflate tyre enough) then slip cards between the rim and bead, then wrap tyre in newspaper.

I used silver wheel paint in cans, and wheel lacquer. three coats of each. I let them cure for 2 weeks before fitting, and did it in spring.

sor far so good, seems to be holding up well to road muck, rain etc. and mine is a proper work van.

I didn't spray the inside of the wheel, so I know the hidden side will get minor surface rust over time, but as I say it's a work van .

the van is MUCH more stable on the wider, slightly lower sidewall 16 inch wheel and tyre.
