Experience of EGR removal map
Hi, any advice to be had on EGR removal map.
It's a 1.6 maxi life, 2011, 98k
Researching on pros and cons.
Love the van & don't want to fall foul of legal requirements BUT
Egr and cooler was only replaced 25k ago ( 850 pounds).
We do lots of short commutes.
Only run 1 vehicle so it's a pain when it's stuck in limp mode..
Garages don't want to know the repair as it's a nightmare job.
Have found some potential issues with higher engine temps, blocked dpf, lower mpg.....
Really would appreciate some experiences as I have until tomorrow to make a call.
Not really concerned with cost, this is all about hassle factor and reliability.
Thanks invadvance

Experience of EGR removal map
I’ve had my van remapped by Matt over at DubUnit. The EGR has been switched off but left in situ so there won’t be any issues come MOT time.
Like you I was worried about the life of the DPF afterwards but Matt assured me that there won’t be any issues going forward as on the caddy, the DPF will still regenerate as needed.
I’ve had the map on since about March with no issues whatsoever.
If you’re only doing short runs, I’d suggest a 20 mile run down the motorway every fortnight or so to allow for regeneration.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply, very much appreciated
Any others please that have had this mod done maybe for a longer period.
She's an old girl but we absolutely love her and don't want to potentially risk a few more good years with her!

Re: Experience of EGR removal map
If you're really worried, you could always source a second ECU and have the EGR and immobiliser deleted on that so it's plug and play - that way if you have any problems you can switch back by swapping ECUs again. Or, you can keep the deleted ECU in the van and swap it in if the EGR fails again. That way you'd be legal on emissions but still have something to get you home should you go into limp mode.
I temporarily deleted the EGR on my MK1 Octavia a few months back while doing emissions testing work on it. Soot emissions dropped from around 45 milligrams per kilometre down to around 16 after deletion. So you might find it helps to keep your DPF clean. On the downside, the Octavia stank with the EGR off, but it was 21 years old with 190k on the clock...

Re: Experience of EGR removal map
Hi, thankyou for the reply.
My caddy hasn't had the emissions fix.
The gentleman who owned it at the time of the recall refused it.
If I get the the EGR deleted will the software be updated to include the 'emmissions fix' or does it just map out the egr?

The emissions fix was something that was only done at the dealers, and as you’ve probably guessed, wasn’t a fix at all!!
Any remapping work would be carried out somewhere else as that’s not a service that dealers offer.
Where abouts in the country are you? DubUnit is in Burton upon Trent, it’s worth travelling to. I made the journey from Liverpool.

Re: Experience of EGR removal map
Thank you.
I'm in mid Wales.
I can get the EGR mapped out by a local guy who's done a load of these.
I just don't want to go messing with the van if it's going to cause me problems down the road, I'd rather just get the EGR replaced.
However if the EGR delete is the way to go then I'll just get that done
It seems as if it's my only option at the moment, I have rung around a few garages and the earliest they can do an EGR replacement is end of November.

Re: Experience of EGR removal map
Hi be aware some dealers just updated the software without notifying the owners if they went into dealers for service or repair . You need to check what software number your ECU is using. As previous owner would not have known if he used VW service or repair this happened to me tested van on test drive lovely one week later collected van then my troubles began. Check out E189 had no choice. You cannot always believe what you are told.

Yes, VW dealers do service updates and don't inform the customer always. In my wife's polo the gears went funny normally as it drove around roundabouts from new - VW denied it was faulty but at the next service (was still under guarantee) they replaced the transmission totally and wouldn't tell us what they did. Ever since it was fine.
I heard the end of a news item in Germany that the European court recently made a ruling that meant some people can get (more) dosh from VW w.r.t. the diesel scandal... I didn't catch the details but will keep my eyes and ears open...

Hi thanks for replies.
I will check for updates but last time diagnostics were done, the mechanic noted it was on the 'old' software.
Update on repair, booked in for 2 weeks time, new EGR.....1200 pounds.
Hope it lasts longer than 18 months this time!

I’ve got a 2.0tdi A3 so slightly different, but had an EGR fault on it putting it into limp mode. So had the EGR mapped out instead of replacing it, still in situ just unplugged. Been like that for around a year and a half and had no problems

Don’t need to disable immo just clone the existing ecu.BenT wrote:If you're really worried, you could always source a second ECU and have the EGR and immobiliser deleted on that so it's plug and play - that way if you have any problems you can switch back by swapping ECUs again.
