But the caddy I am looking at buying has just been called back to the dealer because 2 injectors failed and an engine warning light came on so it should be getting repaired. But is this a on going thing with this type of caddy?

The caddy seems to have pretty low mileage aswell just about to hit 60k so I thought it would of been alright.

Yep, they're lovely vans - solid, comfortable, easy on the eye... but the injectors can and do fail stochastically. If you're not comfortable replacing them yourself and keeping a spare in the van for those random failures then you might be better off looking at something else. Unless you're very good at budgeting. Some breakdown cover will pay to replace them too, but perhaps not on an 11 year old van.

It might also be worth replacing the clutch master cylinder prophylactically, as they can fail, leaving you stranded. Mine's been great other than that.

I think a plus is it's a dealer repair. The injectors should be new, genuine and warrantied. And that's half the injectors done.

Though, having been on the forum for a while I would be cautious buying a 1.6, knowing what I do now. That's clearly where you are.
But from what I can understand some injectors are less problematic than others and if replaced with different generation ones might be no less reliable than the 2.0 engines. Think it's worth a bit of investigation with the dealer to get a clearer picture of ongoing reliability.

But then I bought a 2.0 2017 with a dpf and adblue. Not sure I would buy that now knowing the problems these systems can give.

I think the 1.9 TDI was the sweet spot for the VW diesel reliability.

My Caddy is a 2014 1.6.

Its not perfect as my build thread will tell you but it does go well, ive used it for about 11k in the last 6 to 7 months and little issues that have taken it off the road.

The injector info is useful though, i'll bear that in mind

I would love to know the percentage of 1.6's that had issues compared to other engines.
It seems like they're not the most reliable injectors and yes, there's a lot of horror stories but also, nobody opens a thread to talk about the problems they didn't have. My 1.6 will very soon have done 200k kilometres. I've done 40k of those. It's been remapped. Works great.
My girlfriend's 1.6 has done 120k ish... Not a problem.

Sounds good to me on the injectors being replaced. The engines are the fastest as standard but can be worked on with a remap or egr & dpf delete remap

Can I ask what problems the 2.0 engines can give? I have just bought a 2017 2.0 with adblue, not sure if it has a dpf. Tia

It's not the VW 2.0l engines specifically but all modern diesels that have various particulate and Nox reducing systems that are unreliable. Don't get me wrong, cleaner diesels are a good thing but the demands of Euro 6 emission standards has either deliberately or coincidentally made the once reliable diesel engine the most unreliable type of ICE engine.

The MK4 is the best looking version, but I would trade some looks for reliability and get an earlier version that has less of the troubling systems

Completely agree in the reliability of DPF engines, but unfortunately it is becoming difficult to own one if you need to drive into cities due to low emission zones.
