2nd Battery / Leasure Battery

Post by Wombat »

So spent too much time looking for the power steering top up reservoir that isn't there...

Got curious.
What option goes here in this void ? Such a big blank space.

Can I put a battery here, close to connections even. Is this just a really bad idea? Seems fine...

Thanks

It all depends on what engine you have.
My air filter is there.

Ah, that makes sense. I have a little 1.4 petrol. Thanks.

Also more room to cook under hood dinners but that is another post with recipes.

Also to add, the best place for a leisure battery is in the cabin area as they don’t like the temperature changes under the hood.

Looks like a good spot to me too Wombat. Does people use lithium batteries? If so i guess you would like to have it close to the generator to keep your charge cable short and fat?

Thanks for the heads up, yes the heat changes will shorten life...

I just had a quick look at your build too, like the lights in the compartments, great idea.

On location of leisure battery, I've seen a suggestion that this can be positioned under the passenger seat (albeit compromising the air vent to the rear footwell area). However, I'm wondering if this is only possible with Touran bases?

I stuck my leisure/aux battery in that very spot under the hood.

Thanks Guys.

I am going to search for a relay module that turns on above a voltage now. I am pretty cheap.

I have a start/stop button. It turns the motor off if I brake and stop for a bit.

So smart Alternator. I'll have to see if something is written on it.

More thinking required to keep parts cost below $10.

My last car was from 1964 so all this tech is interesting.
Can't seem to find vcds setting for "last state" for the start/stop. The buggers.
Only locked myself out once so far, I hope this all ends well.
I bought it cheaply, it needs some paint.

Thanks

Update on leisure battery installation (into 2015 Maxi Life):

Original Caddy seats & bases removed. Touran bases fitted (original seats replaced with Audi A3 S Line seats).
Below passenger seat is a pre-cut section of carpet/insulation into which I've secured a low profile leisure battery (model ABS LP75 at https://advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/p ... batteries/ ). I cut out the bottom of the Touran base storage unit to accommodate this which also serves to protect/hide the battery.

Durite voltage sensitive relay mounted on board in recess below rear n/s passenger footwell (cover needed modifying slightly to accommodate the height of the relay & an associated in-line isolator). 6 way fusebox also mounted on board. So far, this is supplying:
- 3 sets of additional LED lights ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CGCZT2MN? ... in_title_3 ) mounted on original ceiling. These flood the vehicle with light.
- Additional power outlets ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CCY3KRFP? ... in_title_1 ) mounted in rear n/s
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CCY3KRFP? ... in_title_1 )

Plan was to run in a supply for an additional screen on dash for (1) navigation support, and (2) to serve as a screen for videos etc when parked up. However, this has proven to be a compromise (and a bit of a faff with cables), so I'll probably stick with Google maps on the phone and carry an old Surface Go tablet which has a superb quality display.

A few more jobs to follow, once I find the time...
