Josh’s Commercial Mk4 - mk8 GTD seats fitted

Post by Joshuaaitken »

Hi everyone, thought I’d post a little thread about a Caddy I’ve just purchased. It’s a Mk4 2.0tdi 5 speed, quite useable spec for a commercial type van.

Tailgate
Discovery Media
A/C
Rear parking sensors
Aftermarket tow bar

I was browsing eBay a few months ago looking at Caddy’s again and thought that I’d love a commercial Mk4 with a tailgate and this popped up for £5500, I paid £5k no VAT. It’s done 125k and has a water leak. It replaces a car I bought to munch some mileage, a 2015 TT S Line Ultra which I must say is one hell of a car (with window tints so nobody can see you Image). Pictured below having a service before sale.

Image

Obviously I’d like the Caddy to have a few less miles but I have bought a broken engine for not a lot of money to act as a spare for parts if ever needed.

Image

I’m going to chuck a timing belt kit and water pump on in the coming weeks and give it a major service - I do a lot of miles with work so it must be ready for that. I’m hoping I find the water leak whilst doing the pump as I’m going to change the expansion tank at the same time.

I’ve got a little mileage dispute with work at the moment, they’re asking me to do 3500 miles a month so I’ve asked them to re evaluate my package as the mileage is huge and it’s all for additional responsibilities. They agreed to limit my mileage on Wednesday but asked me to do the same mileage the following day - I said yes as kind as they provide a vehicle. An hour later this turned up.

Image

I’m planning a on lowering the Caddy and slapping some 18” steel wheels on, I’d like to get the rears banded by an inch for a look that’s slightly different to the rest. Other than that, on the exterior it’ll have a side rail cover and probably the removal of the tow bar.

For the Caddy gurus, I know there are a good few of you from owning other Caddy’s in the past.

I think I can add stalk CC as I have a factory MFSW and later add a Polo steering wheel, the Mk7 style? Could somebody confirm the steering module P/N’s I need please and maybe what stalk P/N I need?

I’ve got VCDS however, it’s a HEX-CAN so will only do up to 2019 vehicles. I’m working on getting a HEX-NET unlimited VIN but if anyone with something pre 2018 needs VCDS let me know, I’m in Gloucester.

I’ve started the timing belt and water pump today, so glad I did because the water pump bearings were very very lumpy.
Belt was the original so well overdue.
No evidence of any coolant leaking out of the expansion bottle or any staining on the engine block surrounding the water pump but, the mating face of the water pump shows signs of coolant seeping past the o ring. We’ll see if it rectifies the fault.
Are there any common reasons for coolant loss in these engines? I’ve replaced a good amount of EGR coolers on the CHXA engines due to them passing coolant however, these are a completely different kind of cooler and I’ve not really touched them before.
I’ve also done a major service, can happily report that all items removed were genuine and oil was good condition.

I’ll get the belt finished this morning.

All done, manually span her over twice and the tools just slid right in.

Managed to straighten the headlight while I was in the arch too! Result!

Currently trying very hard not to spend any money on this with another baby coming in 10 days and a sit down with my boss this week to discuss a car. I’m finding myself looking at Mk8 GTD seats but at £1000+ I’m struggling, I paid £1450 for a set of wingbacks about 5 years ago!
Also, the want for some coilivers and 18” steels is very real but, realistically I’m not going to have time to fit them in the next couple of months.

I’ve just collected some mk8 GTD seats, arm rest console, front carpets and seat bases. Can’t wait to get it all cleaned up and fitted!

Got the seats fitted along with the carpets and centre console. Disappointingly, the arm rest needs a cover as it has a burn I didn’t notice, the GTD ones on eBay aren’t this style fabric, more the mk6/7 style so it’ll be a leather one I expect.
Maybe someone has a clean original arm rest cover they’d let me have in a swap for this one and a cover of their choice?
Also fitted my old Forge big knob from nearly 10 years ago, it’s been in many cars over the years.

Whilst I had the flooring up I routed 2x 12v wires, one for an underseat sub and the other for an accessory 12v fuse board - switched roof lights etc. I’ve also routed some rear speaker wire and ordered a RCA adapter for the media player.

I think next on the list will be wheels and coilovers, baby is coming tomorrow and I have a month off work so I can slow time get it done. I’ll do front and rear pads at the same time as they’re both low.

Another disappointment is that replacing the water pump hasn’t solved my coolant leak. Looks like I’ll be replacing the charge cooler during my time off too!

I need opinions on wheels from you fine forum folk, I’m torn between these:

And these:

Ideally I’d buy the JBW’s and get the rear 2 banded however, money isn’t as free as it used to be and all 4 would need repainting so, I might go for the first ones to give the staggered look. Does anyone have either of them fitted?

Are these centre caps from a T6? If so, are there any fitment issues with that PCD being 5x120?
I did a set of floating centres on my blue T6, looked decent, might do the same again.

Cheers, I think they’re a nice nod to keeping things original whilst subtly modifying. I’m yet to do a long journey so I’m not sure how comfy they’ll be

Just ordered the JBW ROK’s, going to use the tyres on the alloys fitted to the van and sell the alloys on to help fund some coilovers. I really shouldn’t have spent what I have in the last couple of weeks on the van approaching £2k now.
