Andy's Mountain Bike Caddy Maxi *custom lighting now fitted

Post by DownhillMaxi »

After having the caddy for a few months I thought I had better get a few pictures up of how it's going

This is standard the day I got him home

It quickly needed some new shoes

I know it's sitting quite high, but the problem I have is I regularly go to mountain bike race weekends and have to camp in the caddy, the campsite is usually a farmers field so I can't really lower it too much. I was chatting to a guy a few weeks ago at a race who had a lovely 1 month old caddy in that lovely black paint that looks almost purply when you get close. Anyway he had the vmaxx kit on but steel wheels and the sump ground out going into the field and he was brushing the ground all the way.
So I may only lower it slightly, the eibach kit only drops it 45mm so I'm hoping that will be ok.

**Tapatalk only allows 3 photos to be uploaded at a time**

Next came a bit of insulation, armed with 4 rolls of wickes flashing tape I set about the wheel arches and side panels, every gap or hole it packed with insulation as well. We have rolls of 5mm rubber matting at work that no one uses and it's pretty much the exact width of the Caddy.

I had carpeted the sides in that picture as well, next came the modification of the wheel arch boxes. Now I'm planning on sleeping in the caddy quite often so I had to figure out a way to have a bed and have storage for riding kit, camping equipment etc.

So I used baton to make a sleeping platform that can be easily pushed to the back of the van out the way during the day.

Both me and the wife slept in the van and had more than enough room and were incredibly comfy. The bike goes on the front seats over night and all the kit goes under the batons.

I will get some more pictures up soon.

I'm at a bit of a dilemma though, I was just hunting round for the cheapest eibach lowering kit and the best i found were on T4RUS but it highlights that they are not for maxi or 4wd models.

Does this mean I am going to have to go for the v-maxx kit? Any other thoughts/suggestions

Few more pics

To protect the bumper from pedals and chainrings I fitted a bumper protector from T4RUS and its top quality

New stereo- I have had various double din stereo's in the past and unless you want to spend a small fortune to get a decent one its not worth it. So for a smaller amount I went for a top end pioneer stereo which has a big punch for the cost. Ordering some Focal speakers soon so the stereo should be top notch, I already have a sub from my last van so may fit that as well.

Flooring- these are foam mats that link together like a jigsaw, designed for gyms, play areas etc. Cheap, comfy and good insulation. They may get a bit tatty over time with bikes going in and out, but only time will tell. With the rubber matting on the floor, the ply screwed on top of that and with these 8mm foam mats the sound insulation is excellent. Very quiet even on motorways, not much louder than our car

Bit of a mess from a day out on the bikes yesterday but our 2 downhill bikes and riding kit. I made a stand that the bikes stand in and are ratchet strapped too the 2 mounting points behind the seats
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1348819046.725273.jpg

I made use of the storage in the back

It came with a solid bulk head and I had to remove it for extra room, but this left gaps in the trim which were pretty unsightly. So on a rainy day I took a saw too the bulkhead and cut out some trim to cover the gaps

Not the best picture, but it's a metal frame I knocked up at work. This is when I had it in my Vito. I then put a ratchet strap from the two mounting points at the front and over the wheel. Holds it in solid

New stoppers fitted last night. Hopefully this should give me more consistent braking now.

Brake calipers and carriers of a mk5 edition 30 golf with EBC red stuff pads, EBC grooved and dimpled discs and HEL braided hoses.

Feeling good so far, need to take em on a decent run to get them warmed up properly.
