Caddy life manual
Looking for a caddy life swb with a manual box but they are almost non existent.
Does anybody know if they were some kind of special option or were they just produced in very low numbers for the UK market?
The pretty much seem to be exclusively DSG boxes which have a reputation for being very costly to repair/replace when they fail

Re: Caddy life manual
You might divide opinion about the manual over DSG. I've had a Maxi Life with DSG for a few years now and absolutely love it. Wouldn't go back to a manual now. From what I've read the DQ250 box is pretty solid if maintained / serviced as per schedule which is what you would expect. I've read the later DQ200 7 speed is not the best but again YMMV. Isn't the manual only a 5-speed?

Re: Caddy life manual
My Caddy has the 6-speed DSG and over 250k miles on it. I love it.
There's a six speed manual. I recall reading a post by Doc saying that both the 6-speed manual and DSG are stronger than the 5-speed. This was in a post relating to power upgrades.

That's good mileage. What kind of maintenance and frequency have you done to get those kind of miles?kobat79 wrote:My Caddy has the 6-speed DSG and over 250k miles on it. I love it.

Re: Caddy life manual
I'm slowly starting to consider a dsg since I'll be waiting forever to find manual.
Just need to do a bit more research so I know what to look for.
Looking at a 2017-2020 caddy 2.0 diesel.
How can I tell which dsg units were fitted to these models?

Re: Caddy life manual
6 speed is the DQ250 and 7 speed is the DQ200. If you are looking at a Caddy from 2017-2020 then it will be the DQ200. I don't think the MK5 came out until early 2021.

Re: Caddy life manual
Official service interval for the DQ250 is 4yrs or 40,000 miles whichever comes first.

Re: Caddy life manual
Things I like about mine, it's just effortless driving compared to a manual. Driven manuals for 35 years and my Caddy is the first auto I'd ever driven. The gearing is good on the motorway, I tend to sit at 65-67 with cruise control on and it's about 1800rpm and I return low to mid 50's.
The DSG Coasting Function is pretty cool and helps to drive up the mpg.

Re: Caddy life manual
@juliang71 Out of interest, does the Coasting Function on your caddy operate when using Cruise Control? It doesn't on mine and that's the main reason I don't use Cruise Control more often since mpg takes a slight hit.

Is that the case for the 2.0l engines?juliang71 wrote:6 speed is the DQ250 and 7 speed is the DQ200. If you are looking at a Caddy from 2017-2020 then it will be the DQ200. I don't think the MK5 came out until early 2021.
I read somewhere else that the 2.0's use the dq250

What sort of cost should I expect to pay to get a service done on one of these?juliang71 wrote:Official service interval for the DQ250 is 4yrs or 40,000 miles whichever comes first.

Re: Caddy life manual
So in answer to your questions.
The Coasting Function in my opinion is not active when you are using cruise control because the coasting function enables the DSG to disengage, whereas cruise control is just trying to maintain a speed. Observing the engine RPM tells me this and also you can see from the display if its in "D" or not, I kind of just figured it out. However in my experience and on my Caddy it has made absolutely no difference to the MPG that I get at all. I use a mixture of both functions when driving.
Mines a MK4 VW Caddy Maxi Life 2.0l diesel, registered Feb 2019 it has the 6 speed DQ250 DSG. I was just looking at the MK5 and I might be mistaken, the DQ200 is a 7 speed dry clutch used in smaller vehicle. The DQ381 is an upgrade to the DQ250 and is a 7 speed wet clutch, it's this that might be in the MK5 Caddy, you'd need to confirm that though.
Expect to pay several hundred pounds I would have thought, given a genuine service kit is a couple of hundred pounds according to the internet and it isn't something I would do at home. Mine is due later this year and will be getting done. A quick call to your local VW dealer or specialist can confirm that for you.
