Are you sure it's the tailgate? I've got a tailgate and a nasty rattle but it's actually the spare wheel carrier that's making all the noise, they can be a right pain aswell with rusty bolts

Mine is also driving me crazy, I started a thread on it recently.
Probably going to waste another couple of hours trying to find the source at the weekend.

Is your jack mounted on the rear right inside corner? If so, I might be worthwhile removing that to check if it's the cause.

When I first got my van, just over 12 months, I searched for a rattle for days,- tightened doors, rear doors, jack,- everything. got it on a ramp and found ARB bushes were loose, could rattle them by hand.
£7 each from local TPS. 4 bolts out - 4 bolts back in - SWEEEET.
Did it on the drive on ramps, took longer to dig the ramps out than to do the job.
Hope yours is as easy.

Try a little strip of insulation tape around your striker. My money is on the rattle is from striker to latch. You want to create a nice snug fit without causing the latch to stick. Seen it a thousand times also adjust your side buffers up nicely. The tailgate needs to just rest on them. Often see people have them protruding too far out creating a high tensioned tailgate. This just adds to the problem.

I think this did the trick for me (road test in the morning).

Could feel the play in the tailgate when it was supposed to be latched. Two layers of insulation tape and it feels solid.

I didn’t check if I can loosen the tailgate latch bolts and slide the latch back a touch to bring it closer to the strike/hook.

Does the fixed hook bolted to the floor, wear? Looks like a nylon roller 🤔
