Caddy Maxi Camper project

Post by mevrocket »

Had my Caddy Maxi for 6 months my aim is to convert it into a camper.
slow progress as im in no rush at the minute but i though i had enough done to post some pictures

i went for the flashband method of sound deadening as it was a lot cheaper and i planned to put plenty of insulation in to help.
i covered all single skin panels and the floor for good measure.. (hadnt finished the sides in this pic)

Image

cut a hole out behind the passenger seat to open up the footwell for easier access.. eventually decided to do the same for the drivers side
covered the floor with 3 layers of double sided Airtec insulation and uses ply as joists to support the floor off the insulation.

Image

covered the wheel arch with 2 layers of insulation

Image

i didnt like how the ply was loose at the rear of the van so i made a ply form to attach the sides to and make it rigid

Image

3 layers of insulation on the walls

Image

Image

i didnt want to just carpet onto the wheel arch so i ply lined it too keeping as much space for the inside as i could

Image

ply on the walls and a roof panel in

Image

nearside wheel arch done.

Image

i want to use this wheel arch as a back rest.. i dont really like rock and roll beds so im not going down that route.
my plan is to just sit\lie on the floor on cushions and an airbed or roll mat to sleep on.
so i covered it in 1 inch of Firm foam

Image

carpeting done on the walls( doors still to do)
and a 240v and 12v feeds fun under the floor
battery will be going behind the drivers seat in the footwell

Image

wooden floor in, really wanted solid oak or burnt bamboo but unfortunately it was a little too expensive for me.
im happy with the oak laminate for free from my girlfriend.
I also decided to put units in the van too for storage.. it makes the sleeping area a lots smaller but i only intend in sleeping in it by myself or with the girfriend so i dont mind it being cosy then.
the rough size of the units is masked off.

Image

unit frames almost done. no idea of door configuration yet so need to have a play.

Image

lining the frames with the ply.
my original idea was to use the ply as a temporary measure then use the ply as a template for the laminated ply units but i like the ply and just waiting for some inspiration as to how to finish it.. i have some ideas floating around but not sure yet

Image

another view. i can fit a fridge in there too between the wall and wheel arch.
im looking at a vitrifrigo 40L.. not exactly sure of the size of the cut out in the fridge where the detachable compressor goes. im hoping i can mount it a little over the wheel arch which will stop the units from protruding past the door.. the unit at the minute is worst case scenario. so im not too worried.
altho it may be some time before i can justify £480 for a car fridge

Image

loads left to do but happy with it so far

Loving the polished wood flooring! Looks good mate :D
I'll be doing the Ironman Wales 2014, if your Caddy could spare £1 it'll all be going to Macmillan Cancer Support. Thanks

Looking good mate. What do you lads do for ventilation when you're camping? Just leave the windows down a bit?
For covering your units have a look at the hydrascreens that you can line bathroom walls with. They do it in loads of finishes and would finish it off nice. Easy to clean too.

Looks great, I'm in the slow process of converting my Caddy Maxi. Flashbanded and insulated, loads still to do. What lighting will you use in the roof?

thanks guys.
yes i really like the floor too since its been put down.
chezzy ive followed your build almost from the start.. i love the the vw logo on the rear door.

i managed to fit a full 30m roll of the airtec insulation in .. cost me £100 so i didnt want to waste any.
ive not slept in it yet but im hoping its going to be warm enough as im not getting a heater for the van.
as for lights im putting in some led strip lights.
their ready to be put in but cant til i decide what to do with the center roof panel.

Another very clever van conversion :!: I salute you sir, depending on time of year you might have to rethink the heating even with all the insulation ;)

Slept in mine last weekend, but not exactly middle of winter. Are there any decent yet cheapish heaters around? only seen the £800 + heaters. I'm toying with 4-6 LED downlighters, not sure how much electrical knowledge I'll need though!

the only heaters to fit are propex or eberspacher / webasto there expensive but its the best thing ive done on mine,
i would really like a seven day timer or remote switch on via text message to the control panel ( can do all that with them ) but there another big expense
